Apple TV+ has renewed The Buccaneers for a third season. The news comes two months after the period romantic drama wrapped its Season 2 run on the platform with a big cliffhanger.
Inspired by Edith Wharton’s unfinished final novel, the series follows the eponymous Buccaneers, five fun-loving young American women of the Gilded Age — Nan (Kristine Frøseth), Conchita (Alisha Boe), Mabel (Josie Totah), Lizzy (Aubri Ibrag) and Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse) — who explode into the tightly corseted London of the 1870s. In Season 2, the close friends battled love, heartbreak, motherhood, jealousy and the full force of the English legal system as Nan, now the Duchess of Tintagel, continued to be torn between her husband, Theo (Guy Remmers), the enigmatic Duke of Tintagel, and her big love, Guy (Matthew Broome), Theo’s world-traveler best friend.
The Season 2 finale culminated with Theo abdicating in order to divorce Nan and marry Lizzy and Nan running away from Tintagel with a pregnancy secret she had just shared with Lizzy.

“Absolutely everything’s up for grabs, and none of the things that she thought were certain are certain anymore, except for the fact that [Nan]’s got [Theo]’s child in her stomach, and he doesn’t know about it,” The Buccaneers creator-showrunner Katherine Jakeways told Deadline at the time of the Season 2 finale. “Suddenly, she’s got freedom from being a duchess, freedom from her marriage and freedom from him knowing about this baby, giving her a carte blanche to make her own decision.”
In addition to crafting storylines for the returning characters, The Buccaneers creative team’s Season 3 to-do list includes casting a potential new villain — Theo’s secret, illegitimate half-brother Kit, who was summoned in the Season 2 finale to become the new Duke of Tintagel following Theo’s abdication.

The Buccaneers, which mixes soapy costume drama with Taylor Swift songs, has been well reviewed by critics (72% Rotten Tomatoes average) and has developed a devoted following but has not broken out the way some of Apple TV+’s broad-appeal hits have. Yet to chart on Nielsen’s Weekly Top 10 for streaming originals, the series made a couple of appearances on Luminate’s Top 50 TV rankers in July, largely in the 40s. (Both measure viewership in the U.S.)
“We couldn’t be more delighted to be lacing up our corsets, slipping on our ball gowns and running breathless across the cliffs of Tintagel for the third time to see what passionate adventures our beloved Buccaneers get up to next,” Jakeways said about the Season 3 renewal. “Huge thanks to Apple TV+ and also to the devoted viewers for loving the show as much as we do.”
The Season 2 cast also features Christina Hendricks, Mia Threapleton, Leighton Meester, Grace Ambrose, Maria Almeida, Amelia Bullmore, Fenella Woolgar, Josh Dylan, Barney Fishwick, Greg Wise and Jacob Ifan.

The Buccaneers, which premiered in 2023, marked the first screen acting credit for Broome, who since has become the male lead of a movie franchise, Prime Video’s My Fault: London.
Written by Jakeways, Season 2 was directed by William McGregor, Rachel Leiterman, John Hardwick and Charlie Manton. Jakeways and Beth Willis serve as executive producers, with Season 1 and 2 producer Joe Innes promoted to executive producer for Season 3. The Buccaneers is produced for Apple TV+ by The Forge Entertainment, a Banijay UK company.
