The Sinclair family are coming back.
Amazon has renewed YA series We Were Liars for a second season. It comes two months after the mystery-thriller launched on Prime Video.
It’s not a surprise as Amazon execs have been telegraphing the move for the last few weeks.
Amazon MGM Studios head of TV Vernon Sanders said that the company has been “really excited by the results we’ve seen” and “there’s been quite a clamor from fans of that show to keep the story going”. Laura Lancaster, Head of US SVOD TV Development and Series – Co-Productions at Amazon MGM Studios called the show a “must-watch series” that has “captured the cultural conversation” last month.
We Were Liars is an adaptation of E. Lockhart’s bestselling book. It follows Cadence Sinclair Eastman and her tight-knit inner circle, nicknamed the Liars, during their summer escapades on her grandfather’s New England private island. The Sinclairs are American royalty—known for their good looks, old money, and enviable bond—but after a mysterious accident changes Cadence’s life forever, everyone, including her beloved Liars, seems to have something to hide.

The author recently told Deadline that she encouraged fans to read We Were Liars prequel book Family of Liars as they wait for a potential second season.
“If you watch We Were Liars all the way til the end and you watch the little coda, you can see that that coda tips to the start of Family of Liars,” she said. “We have not forgotten about what’s going on with Johnny and Carrie.”
Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie wrote, exec produced and served as co-showrunners on season one. Plec discussed what a second season might look like. She told Deadline that the second season would “theoretically” take viewers “deeper into the moms’ lives as well and add another generation to the story”.
Emily Alyn Lind stars as Cadence Sinclair Eastman and the series also stars Shubham Maheshwari, Esther McGregor, Joseph Zada, Caitlin FitzGerald, Mamie Gummer, Candice King, Rahul Kohli, and David Morse.

Exec producers also include Emily Cummins, Brett Matthews, Pascal Verschooris and Lockhart. It is produced by Universal Television and and Amazon MGM Studios.
Plec and Adly MacKenzie said the “fan response was truly special”. “There are still plenty of secrets buried on Beechwood Island and we can’t wait to keep digging them up,” they added.
“MacKenzie and Plec have big, big plans for Season Two, including everything readers of my books are dying to see onscreen — and a lot of surprises as well,” added E. Lockhart.
Amazon’s Lancaster said a second season was a “no-brainer”, while Erin Underhill, President, Universal Television called the renewal “another testament to Julie and this cast and crew’s extraordinary talent”.
