A day before its season three finale, Apple TV+ is officially bringing back Foundation for a fourth season.
The renewal had been in the works for some time after the streamer tapped Ian Goldberg (Fear the Walking Dead) as new co-showrunner and executive producer earlier this year with a writers room for the fourth season set up.
Goldberg’s hiring came after a rocky third season that saw the exit of co-developer, showrunner and director David S. Goyer amid production restarts and budget adjustments on the adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s stories that stars Jared Harris and Lee Pace.
The series originally came from Skydance Television, which is now part of the revived Paramount Television Studios.

In season three, The Foundation has become increasingly established far beyond its humble beginnings while the Cleonic Dynasty’s Empire has dwindled. As both of these galactic powers forge an uneasy alliance, a threat to the entire galaxy appears in the fearsome form of a warlord known as “The Mule” whose sights are set on ruling the universe by use of physical and military force, as well as mind control. It’s anyone’s guess who will win, who will lose, who will live and who will die as Hari Seldon, Gaal Dornick, the Cleons and Demerzel play a potentially deadly game of intergalactic chess.
The series stars Harris, Pace and Lou Llobell. Season three also starred Cherry Jones, Brandon P. Bell, Synnøve Karlsen, Cody Fern, Tómas Lemarquis, Alexander Siddig, Troy Kotsur and Pilou Asbæk as well as Laura Birn, Cassian Bilton, Terrence Mann and Rowena King.
Goldberg and David Kob serve as co-showrunners and executive producers for season four alongside Bill Bost, Lee Pace, Michael Satrazemis, Robyn Asimov and David S. Goyer.
“There is no series quite like Foundation and we feel lucky and honored to be carrying the torch forward as co-showrunners into season four,” said Goldberg and Kob. “We look forward to continuing the epic, emotional, storytelling that defined the first three seasons of the show, and to be working alongside some of the most talented, passionate creative partners in the business.”
“It’s been fantastic to watch Foundation become such a global phenomenon, with fans tuning in from every corner of the world,” added Matt Cherniss, head of programming, Apple TV+. “With each new season, the excitement around this trailblazing sci-fi epic just keeps building due to the bold storytelling and collective artistry of this extraordinarily talented cast and creative team. We’re excited to keep exploring this universe together in season four.”
LET’S GOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
Season 3 has been a contender for best television of the year. I’m stoked, but at the same time, uh… I’ll admit, the change in writing staff has me apprehensive.
I’ve stuck with it so far by ff’ing any scene without Lee Pace in it. His character drives the plot, plus he’s the best thing about it, so the rest is just filler.
Funny how I can follow the plot just fine without half the show. That’s probably why people complain it’s boring. It’s not, you just need to learn what parts to skip.
This reads almost verbatim like comments I read during the first season’s airing. I don’t think it’s remotely true in season 3, however.
are you kidding me, Foundation is unwatchable. Aren’t there any other classic sci-fi novels Amazon can adapt?
Foundation is fantastic this year. It’s steadily improved each season. Do you remain dissatisfied even now?
Very good news. A gorgeous show that keeps getting better. Hoping for a great finale.
