An expert colourist on how LG's innovative OLED TVs produce a true-to-life viewing experience

Television technology has advanced quite significantly since its inception, with major milestones in the 50s and 60s that brought the world its colour TVs. Since then, the introduction of OLED technology has become one of television’s most recent revolutionary advancements.Â
Short for Organic Light-Emitting Diode, OLED televisions have been a game changer on the market over the last decade — and that’s coming from personal experience.
It’s why I was excited to get to witness some of LG’s latest innovations at LG’s Celebration of Colour and Light, which welcomed the summer solstice and showed off the incredible 2025 lineup of LG OLED TVs, which made their Canadian debut.
At the event, I was able to meet Canadian Colourist & Finishing Artist Grant McNair, who broke down the process of colour grading — the final step that elevates visuals, creating a unified look that sets an emotional tone on screen — and why LG OLED technology delivers a viewing experience that stays true to the filmmaker’s vision.
After the event, I spoke with McNair to understand how TV technology has evolved, how to optimize your TV for the best picture, and how LG’s innovative technology brings the cinematic experience home with unparalleled accuracy and depth.
Pushing modern technology
There’s a lot of artistry that goes into making a film look as good as it does, and the latest technology within the new LG OLED evo series is one of the best ways, in McNair’s opinion, to truly see the artistic intent of a film.
“For someone who’s never seen OLED in person, it’s kind of hard to describe,” McNair tells Daily Hive. “On a typical display, the blacks are more of a dark grey, so the shadows feel a bit murky. But on OLED, the screen disappears. The black is actually black, and everything else pops against it.”
This contrast is even further emphasized thanks to the Brightness Booster Ultimate technology and AI-driven picture enhancements on the LG OLED evo G5 — boasting around a 45 per cent increase in brightness from the previous evo G4.
Also, LG’s OLED evo lineup is certified for “Perfect Black” and “Perfect Colour,” which enhances perceived brightness and contrast and ensures vibrant colours, resulting in a full picture in total accuracy. It’s no surprise either: LG has been named the world leader in OLED TVs for the past 12 years.
Picture the difference
One of the most common mistakes McNair sees with people’s televisions isn’t that they’ve changed settings — it’s that they haven’t changed anything at all.
“They take the TV out of the box, plug it in, and just leave it on the default settings, which may make things eye-catching, but are not accurate,” says McNair.
While traditional picture settings might feel complicated, LG OLED TVs have a built-in Filmmaker Mode. This setting turns off any image enhancement that can change the film’s intended look to ensure you’re getting the filmmaker’s genuine vision.
“That one change disables all the artificial enhancements, like motion smoothing, sharpening, and oversaturated colours — and gives you a much more accurate image right out of the gate. What stands out with LG’s approach is their commitment to accuracy, to showing films the way they were intended to be seen by the filmmaker.”
A true-to-life viewing experience
Gamers will also be thrilled with the performance of these TVs, especially the LG OLED evo C5, which includes 4K at 144Hz, minimal input lag, VRR support, and VESA’s ClearMR 9000 certification for smooth visuals.
LG’s new OLED evo lineup is packed with incredible visual technology in a sleek and minimal design, which includes thinner bezels and a variety of screen sizes to fit perfectly into your home.
“OLED’s true black levels and lack of blooming, along with features like Filmmaker Mode and Dolby Vision, help preserve the look and feel we work so hard to craft.”
