Interview with Maggie Hall + 8 Days of Chanukah giveaway!

MaggieHallHeadshot1I am SO SO SO excited about Day 3 of the 8 Days of Chanukah giveaway, because it brings with it one of my very favorite people on the entire planet. Maggie Hall is my critique partner, cover designer, everything-else designer, confidant par excellence, and all-around lifemate, but more importantly to the rest of you, she’s the author of the incredibly fabulous international thrillogy that begins with her January 13, 2015 release, The Conspiracy of Us.

I sent Maggie a bajillion questions, and she answered some, and is giving away a an ARC (festively pictured). And, as with all the other giveaways, it’ll be accompanied by a relevant bookmark, in this case, a signed one for Under the Lights, by me, because she is so freaking talented, she designed the thing.

IMAG0047_11. You have one of those incredibly rare publication stories people love to hate – selling your very first book, in a three-book deal, to a big six. But obviously it’s not as easy as it sounds! Upon reflection, what was the most challenging part of the process?

I think the most challenging part was that I was so early in my writing career, I was still learning a lot about the craft of writing and myself as a writer at the same time I was learning about being published, and edited, and all the rest. Of course, I’m still learning, and all writers will forever be learning, but I sometimes feel like the process might have been easier if I had a little more writing experience under my belt before being published. Not that I’m not thrilled it worked out as it did! I feel very lucky.

2. Your trilogy is so different from what’s already out there for teens. What inspired you to write international thrillers? And what can you tell us about yours?

Honestly, I just wanted to write what I want to read. I love-love-love international thrillers as a genre: Travel! Action! Life-or-death stakes! But though there are a ton of adult international thrillers (if you’re not familiar with the genre, think DaVinci Code and James Bond), it’s not a genre that has really crossed into YA much. I wished these kind of adventure novels existed in a space where they crossed over with what I love about YA (high emotional stakes in addition to physical, more time spent on characters, lots of kissing…) 🙂 and though there are some books that get close, there was nothing quite like what I was looking for, so I decided to write it.

So THE CONSPIRACY OF US is pretty much exactly what I want to read. Lots of danger and action. Lots of romance. Lots of travel and glamour. Really high personal and public stakes. And a conspiracy that I’ve always found fascinating.

3. You yourself are quite the world traveler! How have your travel experiences informed your writing and do you have a favorite location? What’s at the top of your travel wishlist?

My travel experiences have hugely informed my writing. The internet obviously has tons of resources for research, but there’s nothing quite like standing on the street exactly where your MC stands, looking up at the building she looks at in the book, and hearing what she hears, smelling what she smells…I think having visited the settings in the book really helped me envision the story going on there in a deeper way.

Two of my favorite cities are in CONSPIRACY: Paris and Istanbul! Paris almost seems like a copout, because who doesn’t love Paris? But I recently got to spend a month there really learning the city as both a tourist and a “local,” and I can’t wait to go back. There’s an energy to Paris that isn’t quite the same anywhere else.

And Istanbul is just such a rich city. It’s a city of contrasts and history, and at the time I visited, it was the first city I’d been to that wasn’t entirely in the “Western world” and the combination of that and the intense beauty of the city is almost overwhelming.

I’ve recently gotten to spend a lot of time in Asia and a little in North Africa, which were both high on my list, so I’d say now my next priority is South America! I’d really love to see Brazil and Argentina and Uruguay and Colombia and Chile…and all of it!

4. When you think of Thrillers, what/who is on your “Must-Read” list?

I read a lot of adult thrillers. I love James Rollins and Steve Berry—they’re my go-tos in terms of international thrillers these days. They do a great job combining history and conspiracy with adventure—it’s right up my alley! Of course, there doesn’t tend to be as much kissing in those books as I prefer…

5. I know you’re definitely a tough one to please when it comes to main characters. What traits make you love or hate a MC, and who stands out among your faves?

It’s true! I am really tough on characters, though I feel like I’ve relaxed my standards a little bit. I think I used to get annoyed when characters did things I myself thought were stupid. Maybe it’s that I’ve been writing more and have come to understand that even my characters don’t do everything I would do, or maybe it’s that I’ve come to see MCs as more human, but I feel like I’m okay with that now.

One caveat, though: I would say I understand and appreciate a larger variety of characters these days, but I still prefer to read about people I LIKE. I want to read characters I’d want to be friends with. I know that isn’t the case for every reader, and that’s okay! But it’s what I enjoy. So if an MC consistently makes decisions I think are so stupid I want to smack her every chapter, or if she’s just not a nice person, I get it, and understand her as a person! But she’s not going to be my favorite-ever character—I am not the audience for unlikable characters.

Karou from the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series stands out for me as one I like. She’s tough but vulnerable enough that I both connect with and admire her. I feel like some characters people love are almost too cool and badass for me—I couldn’t picture being that together at sixteen, so I don’t connect as much as I could. I like connecting. Like recently, one MC I’ve loved is Isla from Isla and the Happily Ever After. I found her so relatable. She’s her own person, not a pushover, not a badass, but also is so obviously a real teenager. Even when I wanted to smack her and tell her she was being an idiot, it was in such a real teenage way to me that I felt like we’d be friends.

So I guess the short version of that long answer is that if I’m going to spend many hours inside someone’s head and living their life, I prefer it to be someone I enjoy!

6. What do you do when you’re not writing future best sellers?

I travel a lot. As you (and probably many of your readers) know, I just spent a year traveling around the world with my husband. Before that I’d been a bunch of places, too, and it probably won’t be too long before I take off again—somehow I can never seem to stay in one place for too long!

I have also been doing a lot of design work lately—especially book covers. (I’ve done a few for this awesome YA/NA author named Dahlia Adler—ever heard of her?) So that’s been an exciting new direction for me.

Other than that…I drink a lot of wine, and do crafty stuff that involves spray painting things gold, and cook a bunch, and watch a lot of CW TV shows.

7. What’s on your TBR for 2015?

Oh wow. You don’t have enough space on this page for everything on my TBR list. Can I just say literally every 2015 debut? I may be biased, but holy crap is 2015 going to be a good year for books.

And then there are the books I’ve already had the privilege to read that are releasing in 2015, like Gina Ciocca’s LAST YEAR’S MISTAKE, Kim Liggett’s BLOOD AND SALT, Katie Stout’s HELLO, I LOVE YOU, Virginia Boecker’s THE WITCH HUNTER, Cat Doyle’s VENDETTA, and oh yeah, an awesome Hollywood contemp called UNDER THE LIGHTS. 😉 And so many more…I’m drowning in great books! I guess that’s a good problem to have.

This Year’s Success!!!!!

Guys. GUYS. GUYYYYYYYSSSSS. Today is so monumental, you don’t even freaking know.

995754_10102110975614749_1418036855_n<–That’s me and my CP Gina, a little less than a year ago, just before she had her adorable baby. But a year before that birth, I got to meet another of Gina’s creations, the incredibly amazing contemp YA romance, LAST YEAR’S MISTAKE.

Now, to say I fell in love with it would be a total understatement. Here are three facts about LYM:

1) To this day, it’s literally the only manuscript I’ve read (not beta’d) twice

2) It’s the first manuscript I ever read where I thought “I wish I’d written that”

3) It is really, really difficult to read it and ever think of saltwater taffy the same way again afterward ❤

Basically, I love this book, and its author, so, so freaking much, and if I were better at gifs and less afraid of copyright violation, this post would be flashing (mostly with pics of biceps and the hotness that is Sean Faris) like whoa. But instead I’m just going to tell you that:

You need this book.

You should be incredibly envious that I’ve already read it.

But

You know that manuscript you side-eye forever because you just know it’s going to be a book someday, even though actual facts seem to be trying to tell you you’re wrong, which makes ABSOLUTELY ZERO SENSE BECAUSE IT IS LITERALLY ONE OF THE BEST THINGS YOU HAVE EVER READ? That is LAST YEAR’S MISTAKE. That is the book you’re going to hold in your hands next year. That is the book I fell in love with two years ago, and that is the book I am so, so excited to shove in everyone’s hands the second it’s humanly possible.

I will leave it to Gina to share the incredible story of how LAST YEAR’S MISTAKE came to find its perfect, perfect home with Sara Sargent and Simon Pulse, but needless to say (even though I said it a lot in this really wordy post) I could not. Freaking. Be happier.

Oh, and did I mention it’s a two-book deal? (JK, I know I didn’t. BUT IT IS.) As someone who has read three other G books since, let me tell you, whatever that second book ends up being, it will be hilarious, awesome, possibly a little dirty, and definitely have some of the greatest kissing ever. Because that’s just how she rolls.

I cannot wait for the rest of the world to see and know it too ❤

Top Ten Bookish-Related Things I Am Thankful For

Welcome to the Thanksgiving edition of Top Ten Tuesday! As I am a very grateful author, I couldn’t skip this one. So, here’s my list!

  1. My husband – Sorry that’s cheesy, but whatever. We’re talking about a man who actually says things like, “Go write – I’ll clean up” and “What can I do so you get more writing time?” on a regular basis. He also doesn’t blink when I ask if my CPs he’s never spoken to can stay with us for a week, says No when I ask if I should give books away because my collection of YA is starting to carpet our living room, knows more of you by name than you can possibly imagine, and has now read three of my manuscripts. So, yeah – he earns the top spot!
  2. My CPs – Look, I know everyone thinks they have the greatest CPs, but the thing is, I really do. My CPs read everything I write, talk things out with me, let me freak out when I need to, make me feel like I’m actually decent at this whole writing thing, write posts like this and this and this, and not only am I closer with them than most people I’ve known for years, but I genuinely believe they want the best for me, always. I don’t think there’s anything more important you could feel about the people you trust with your work. (Oh, and it helps that they are all insanely talented writers and I get first crack at everything they do. It helps a lot.) Major shoutouts to Maggie Hall (and happy birthday to her, too!!), Marieke Nijkamp, Gina Ciocca, Erica Chapman, Sarah Benwell, and Sarah Henning for everything they’ve done and shared with me this year. ❤
  3. My Editor – Do you guys know Patricia Riley? You should. She is afreakingmazing. Yes, I have a book deal because of her, but I also have a better book because of her. (And the rest of the talented SHC team – for real, they have got the best interns and editorial assistants ever.) And the second book, which I’ve been busting my butt on this month? Waaaay better because of her too…and she hasn’t even seen it yet!
  4. My agent – Not only does my agent definitely know more about liquor than your agent, and not only does she let me call her LANAAAAAAAAA, but she is pretty much just the smartest, most supportive, most freaking awesome person ever. (And *also* has a great and brilliant intern! *waves at Alison*) Plus, she thinks I’m good at writing stuff, and I like to hear that.
  5. The YA Misfits – We have been through so much together, as our massive email chains and the growing list of Our Books can attest, and I’m so psyched at all the stuff we’ve shared and done together and been there for!
  6. Awesome Writer Friends – On top of the other fab people mentioned here, there are a few without whose regular texts, IMs, DMs, and emails I’d never get through the day, let alone the year. There are too many to name, but in the acknowledgments of 2013 I could never leave out Rick Lipman, Becca Weston, and Heidi Schulz.
  7. Book bloggers – I know it’s still early and I haven’t actually been reviewed or anything like that yet, but the number of bloggers who’ve already told me they’re excitedly waiting for my book is freaking awesome. Plus, in general, the idea of people putting in crazy amounts of work purely for love of books? Insanely cool. And, sometimes, they even start great memes that get you blogging 😉
  8. Really great books – You know the ones. The ones that make you want to hug the author, or rush to leave a glowing review or rating, or just feel “get” you, or blow you away with the amount of talent they require… This year I was definitely privileged to read some books that blew me away, and I’m so grateful to their authors for giving me things to both get excited about and aspire to. (Which books in particular? Check back for something pretty awesome on this blog in December!)
  9. OneFourKidLit – Selling a book has been my dream for a long damn time, and yet there are so many questions I didn’t even know to have until I got to that point. Thankfully, the amazing authors debuting in 2014 with me have been fabulous at sharing their knowledge and experiences, and have made a world of difference in the process. Plus, I get to read their amazing books early 😉
  10. Bookstores and libraries – I don’t really frequent the latter, and I’ve pretty much signed over my life savings to the former over the past year, but whatever – keep fighting the awesome fight and being places of extreme happiness. I love you.

Marieke Nijkamp Has Some News for You

Why hello there! Do you know Marieke Nijkamp? You know, that lovely Dutch writer, who’s beta’d pretty much every manuscript in existence, probably including yours? Or maybe you know her as one of the brains behind the brilliant DiversifYA? Or perhaps her name’s familiar because she helped with one of the contests you’ve entered? Or is it that you remember that she had not one but two sets of queries and pages posted in WriteOnCon this year that totally kicked ass?

Well, however you know her, she’s my CP (and occasional apartment-mate!) and I am incredibly grateful for her and thrilled to be hosting her on my blog today for a very special announcement, or, what I like to call, The Greatest Guest Post Ever. And with that, I bring you the one, the only, the fabulous, the stroopwaffel-sharing Marieke Nijkamp!

On my first Wednesday in New York, after I saw Newsies with a friend and had key lime cupcakes at Magnolia Bakery, I made my way to my very first B&N event. “Writing a Novel With Blockbuster Potential” with Donald Maass and The Shark herself. Of course, I was fully convinced it was the B&N at 82nd and Broadway, and I only found out I had to be at 86th and Lexington twenty minutes before I was supposed to be there, but I was happily dazzled by being in New York, meeting some of my favoritest CPs in real life, and I had an impossible story brewing in the back of my mind: something about a school shooting, four points of view, and a ridiculous time frame.

By the time I made it to the *right* B&N it was raining, I’d run through Central Park, and the event was hilarious and amazing. Entirely due to Dahl’s scheming, we ended up chatting to three of the attending DMLA agents–Amy Boggs, Katie Shea, and Jen Udden–and it was so much fun hanging out. (Blogger’s Note: Scheming sounds so dirty. I just wanted to meet them! And maybe beg all of them to let us interview them on YAMisfits. Maybe.) When I got home, I dove into the story, Twitter-followed all the people I met on my trip, and occasionally geeked out over music with Jen.

Four months, equally impossible deadlines, and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears later, that impossible story made its debut in The Writer’s Voice (GO TEAM CUPID) in the form of WE ARE OPPORTUNITY. It was such a scary story to write and to put out there. I couldn’t have coped without the readers who loved it as much as I did–and sometimes even more. (Thank you <3)

Later that week, I moderated PitMad–and pitched OPPORTUNITY a couple of times myself. When Jen wanted to know how she could request, I explained the rules to her, and she promptly requested OPPORTUNITY. At the same time, I officially dumped it in the trenches. All in all, I started to calm down a bit. OPPORTUNITY was off to a great start! It got an insane amount of requests and I followed up on the ones I felt would be a good fit for me and my career. And I started drafting my next manuscript.

Now let me backtrack for a bit and say querying OPPORTUNITY wasn’t my first time on the merry-go-round. I’d queried three manuscripts before that, and I was more than happy to settle in for the wait. I’ll let you in on a secret: I loved it. I loved having my stories out there and feeling like I was working on building something. Of course rejections suck, but I never took them as anything more than “not yet” or “not right for me” or “keep writing”. After all, agents are just as passionate about stories as we are, and we’re not on opposing sides. (We’re all in this together! *g*) But focusing on the next story, having amazingly supportive CPs, and–let’s face it–procrastinating on Twitter kept me sane.

Secretly though, I believed OPPORTUNITY would be the one where everything happened overnight.

It wasn’t. The summer was relatively quiet, though with amazing feedback on some of those full requests, and earlier this month, I used WriteOnCon to workshop my Magical MG pitch. Several amazing people convinced me to post my OPPORTUNITY pitch as well, and things went a bit crazy in the YA Query forum. On the second day of WriteOnCon, within a couple of hours, I had three new full requests. One on the boards, one off a query, one off a PitMad request. Jen’s PitMad request.

So I did what I did all those other times. I sent the manuscripts on their merry way, celebrated, interpreted every single word of the requests with my bestest CPs (you can’t have them, they’re mine <3), and eventually went back to my other mss. For some reason, though, I was far more restless this time than I had been over the past couple of months and waiting became infinitely harder.

It took a week for all three agents to get back to me.

The first, an agent whom I admire a great deal, gave me an extensive R&R. My very first R&R in three years of querying, and it was such a fantastic chance. It didn’t always match my vision for the story, but any author would be lucky to have her.

And I woke up to an email from Jen asking if we could set up a time to talk. And I walked around in a daze for a day.

We chatted later that night. She wooed me by quoting Jacques Brel when I picked up the phone, then wowed me with her ideas for revision and for my career as a whole. When she offered, it was a struggle not to say yes on the spot.

Only hours later, the third agent offered too. When we spoke, she was passionate, organized, amazing. Over the following week, some agents bowed out, others made their intention to offer clear, and I forgot how this mysterious thing called sleep worked. It’s a kind of wonderful weirdness that’s hard to describe, even when you’re a writer.

Now when I say I wouldn’t have managed to cope with OPPORTUNITY on my own, I definitely wouldn’t have made it through this week on my own. I spoke to clients, I lived in the dusty archives of PM, I read through every AbsoluteWrite thread, and I basically Gchatted with Dahl, Corinne, and Sarah 24/7 because decisions are hard. (Love you guys <3) In the end, everything I read supported what my gut had told me that first day. That I knew who the right agent was when I talked to her.

So last night, I officially accepted Jen’s offer, and I’m absolutely delighted to announce I’m now part of the DMLA family.

You guys. I HAVE AN AGENT!!!!! 😀

BEHIND THE SCENES, Out in the Open

In November 2011, I decided to do NaNoWriMo for the first time. I wrote 50,000 words of a book called BEHIND THE SCENES, finished it in December, and sent it to two utterly magnificent people – Christopher Koehler and Arielle Kane – who, with many, many notes, helped me turn it from a draft into a manuscript I actually had faith in.

A year ago, I used this blog to post my entry for The Writer’s Voice contest, hosted by Cupid, Brenda Drake, Krista van Dolzer (who just announced her own book deal!!), and Monica BW. I knew about the contest because I followed Cupid on Twitter, and she was the only judge I knew at the time, and SHE IS A ROCK STAR. I prayed she’d pick me, and lo and behold, she did 🙂

Then I got a vote from an agent, who requested a full the next day, and I prayed that she’d rep me, and lo and behold, she did 🙂

And then it got a tiiiiiiny little bit less neat.

Being on submission is hard, man. You get rejections that completely disagree with each other and you’re like, “WTF do I even do with that????” Or you get rejections that make you say, “Dude, I could fix that in five minutes. GIVE ME THE CHANCE.” But most importantly for this particular story, sometimes really awesome, weird, serendipitous things happen.

11/19/12 – I ask my agent if we can go to Spencer Hill Contemporary, which has just launched, only they haven’t just launched and they aren’t actually taking submissions yet. Whoops.

11/28/12 – I get a little impatient about SHC.

January 2013ish *note: I had no idea until like a week ago, obviously* – Patricia Riley and I become friends on Twitter and she promptly invites my agent to send her things for SHC because she wants BEHIND THE SCENES.

March 2013ish – Patricia asks if I would like to come work at SHC as a copy editor and I say DUH OBVIOUSLY IT IS BASICALLY MY DREAM WHAT AND WHERE DO I SIGN

April 2013 – I add a “Wait… can I still send you things? Like, submit you stuff? Or is that super weird and awkward? YOU CAN TOTALLY SAY NO.”

(She does not say no. In fact, she says yes quite emphatically, after which she makes above January confession. I send her BEHIND THE SCENES BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY.)

Me: “No, but really, you can toooootalllllly say no. No pressure!”
Patricia: “Yes, I know I can say no. I have actually done that a billion times because I do this professionally.” (OK, it wasn’t exactly those words but it should’ve been because I am whiny and dumb.)

Two(?) days later:

Patricia: I NEED TO HAVE THIS IMMEDIATELY.
Dahlia: I ALSO NEED YOU TO HAVE THIS IMMEDIATELY.

Or something like that. But a lot more professional. Really.

What followed was a talk about an imaginary sequel that’s no longer so imaginary, and then more talk about doing yet another book together, because obviously.

Anyway, long story short (hahahahahaha), Andrea is AWESOME. Patricia is AWESOME. I am a very lucky writer. And I’ll be publishing 3 books with Spencer Hill Contemporary, beginning in 2014 🙂

Of course, I need to mention a few other people who are awesome, because I’d be nothing, nobody, nowhere without:

1) My family, especially my husband, who is the most patient and supportive Godsend on the planet, and also, he bakes. I may write for myself, but that it makes them proud is the best reason on Earth to keep going.

2) My CPs. Have I mentioned how much I love my CPs? I love my CPs. I cannot even tell you how much. There aren’t any words. They make my work better, they support the crap out of me, and they listen to OH MY GOD SO MUCH WHINING. Marieke, Maggie, Gina, Erica, and Valerie, thank you. For everything. Words aren’t actually enough. But Liam’s abs… they are grateful. Endlessly, endlessly grateful. They are flexing with their gratitude.

3) Everyone else who read BtS (especially Melanie, who was my very first Twitter friend beta!) or held my hand during a freakout or endured the sub process with me and everything that goes with it. Extra-special shoutouts to the YA Misfits; Rick Lipman, aka my fellow schmagent, aka the yang to yang my yang, who has made many a day that much more bearable and GIFtastic; the lovely Heidi Schulz, who should’ve punched me in the face at least once but totally never would; my sub buddy and fellow writer of Hollywood YA, Jen Malone; and Dee Romito, for always trying to keep us both on that positive train.

4) Everyone who read MY NAME IS EVERETT, back when I thought it was “The One,” even though it wasn’t, especially Christopher Koehler, Dani Leeds-Kim, Suzanne Hynes, and Rebecca Trachtman-Friedman, who kept me going and helped me learn the art of working your butt off for a manuscript you love.
