Welcome to the latest edition of Masterpiece Reviews. Once again, we’ve thrown on our favorite velvet robe, turned up the fire, and are here to regale you with stories of the greatest and most classic albums of all time. It’s a fresh, new perspective on why these albums are filed under “M” for masterpiece.

Following the debut self-titled album from the animated band Gorillaz, creators Damon Albarn and animator Jamie Hewlett took a break from the project to work on other creative ventures. Three years later, they regrouped to begin work on their follow-up, Demon Days. This album focused on darker themes that were inspired by a train trip Albarn took through what he called a, “weird, unspoken, forgotten part of China.”

Demon Days was released in 2005 on the strength of singles including “Feel Good Inc.” and “DARE”. Produced by Danger Mouse and featuring guest artists including De La Soul, MF Doom, and actor Dennis Hopper, the album has sold over eight million copies worldwide, pushed Gorillaz further into the mainstream with its infectious hooks and memorable lyrics, and landed on multiple best album lists.
