The Brilliant Idea Barnstar
Dear Gust Justice,

Thanks for your great contributions to the Wikipedia page about Danish elections. Currently I'm writing a paper about the Danish electoral system, for which I would like to create a simular map, but for the Netherlands (with the hypothetical electoral provinces and the little bubbles that represent awarded seats).

As such I was wondering whether you could maybe explain to me how to make such a map myself? If so I will certainly credit you for this work :)

With kind regards,

Stan Stan2754 (talk) 17:33, 28 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Stan2754:

Thanks for the award. For making the maps I start by making the base map. There are other ways you can do this, but I get the files from a government website, edit it to a vector format with QGIS, and then edit it with Inkscape. As for the result, I insert the appropriate number of circles into the electoral districts and then fill in the results based on official sources.

As for the Netherlands, I would probably recommend between 12 and 20 electoral districts. Having the districts correspond to the provinces would be easiest to do. You have districts composed of municipalities but doing so would probably make it harder to calculate the results.

You can use File:Netherlands provinces map blank.svg as a base map and then just copy the circles that I’ve used on my maps onto that. Opening .svg files from Wikimedia is a bit more complicated than it needs to be, but it essentially involves going to the page, pressing CTRL+U, copying the content onto notepad, and then saving as .svg.

Feel free to respond if you need to.

Hello. I believe in your graphic for the Icelandic election, the Reform Party (C) and Centre Party (M) have been swapped by accident. Reform won 5 seats, and Centre won 3. JackWilfred (talk) 14:11, 27 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Danish Elections

[edit]

Hi!

I love the polling place maps you've made for the 2019 and 2021 elections - those are quite rare on Wikipedia. Can I ask where you got the shapefile? I haven't been able to find one myself, as it's quite difficult as a monolingual English speaker.

Thanks! Jujubeecat (talk) 21:06, 11 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the kind words. I got the .geojson from https://dawa.aws.dk/afstemningsomraader?format=geojson Gust Justice (talk) 21:47, 11 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Sweden

[edit]

Hi! I’m curious as to how you colored the map of the Swedish polling areas. What application did you use to make it? 213.113.146.68 19:28, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Essentially I edited the svg code to color the individual shapes by ID. I generated this code using an excel spreadsheet and the officially published results. I didn't use any software beyond that. If you want I can elaborate further. Gust Justice (talk) 19:33, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
If you would be willing to elaborate then that would be amazing! Furgesson (talk) 12:50, 11 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I can try to explain how I code in the color of any single polling area. The svg is exported so that each shape has an ID corresponding to the official ID used by the electoral authority. I did this using mapshaper.org, where you can export from shapefiles to .svg. The shapefiles are published at https://val.se/. What I then do in excel is to associate each polling area with a color used on the map. This is done using the officially published results and som formulas. Once I have the colors associated with each polling area and the polling area's ID, I use a formula to output css code that can be inserted into the vector file. It looks like this: #01140000{fill:#f68996;} Here "#01140000" represents the polling area ID corresponding to polling area 01140000. "#f68996" is the color code corresponding to a polling area where the Social Democrats poll at 25-30% of the vote.
At the end the code inserted into the .svg file should look something like:
<style>
#01140000{fill:#f68996;}
#01140101{fill:#f68996;}
#01140102{fill:#8da5f1;}
(repeat for all the polling areas)
</style> Gust Justice (talk) 13:58, 11 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi! I must just say that you have fantastic mapping skills! I have tried to make a similar map for the EU-elections of 2024 for Sweden. I have found the map files and official results per district at val.se. However, I'm stuck trying to get the correct formulas in excel to firstly singleout the largest party with percentage by district, how do I do that? And how does one formulate it into a css code, and lastly how do one insert the generated code into the .svg file once the previous steps have been achieved? Thanks in advance! TheSwedishEditor (talk) 20:51, 12 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
  1. To find the largest party in each polling area, my approach is to use the xlookup function. Specifically it'd be something like XLOOKUP(LARGE(I5:P5;1);I5:P5;I$4:P$4). Replace the specific cell values with where you place your data. This will output the largest party in the polling area. E.g. "S" or "SD". The last parameter ("I$4:P$4") should be the header for each party's vote share.
  2. To find the percentage of the largest party, you simply use the LARGE function.
  3. What you then want to do, is convert this into a code. Specifically, if e.g. S got 32% of the vote in a polling area, and was the largest party, you want to color that precinct with the 30-35% color, if you use increments of 5%. The way I do this, is I use this formula: S5&ROUNDDOWN(T5*20;0)*5 - This will return a value like "S30", indicating that S is the largest party, and that it got above 30% (but not above 35%).
  4. What you then want to do, is for each code that you are likely to use (e.g. S15, S20, S25, ... all the way up to even S60 perhaps), you want to have a corresponding colorcode. There is no way to do this beyond just manually making a table where in one column you have the previously derived codes for each party that might get pluralities in any polling area, and in the other column you have a corresponding color, e.g. #f47181 for S30.
  5. To get the color for each individual precinct, you simply want to use the lookup function, using the previously derived party codes, and using the table I just described.
  6. To derive the CSS code, you want to use this formula: "#"&A5"&"{fill:"&C5&";}" - where A5 refers to the Valdistriktskod, and C5 refers to the color for the relevant polling area.
  7. It is important that the Valdistriktskod used corresponds to the IDs of the corresponding shape of the .svg. That's what makes my approach work.
  8. Also very importantly, Wikipedia doesn't seem to render the image properly if the code starts with a number. So I recommend inserting a letter in front of each code just to deal with this. E.g. "V01140000" rather than "01140000".
  9. To derive the CSS code from what you have just done, you literally just copy the cells derived from at step #6. You want to then paste that into notepad or a similar program. You then want to write "<style>" as the first line, and "</style>" as the last line. Then you just paste all of that into the .svg file.
  10. To paste it into the .svg you just want to open the .svg file using note pad or a similar program. You want to paste it right before the layers themselves (marked with "<g").
Gust Justice (talk) 10:00, 13 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much! I have now managed to get the colour codes, for example: " V01170002{fill:#F47181;} " However, once I copy them in to the .svg file from the notepad with "<style>" as the first line and "</style>" as the last line, it won't colour in. I guess that the .svg file dosn't have each valdistriktskod, so is there a step I missed when using mapshaper?
1. Download the shapefiles for each region from val.se
2. Add them all to mapshaper so they are combinded
3. Download as .svg
Something I missed?
Thanks in advance! TheSwedishEditor (talk) 17:40, 14 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
On mapshaper when you export to .svg, the IDs are not automatically preserved. What you need to do is use the "command line options" space to write the following command: id-field=Lkfv - this tells mapshaper that "Lkfv", the shapefile's ID for each polling area, is to be used as the ID for the .svg. To make sure each ID in the .svg is prefaced by "V" (or really any other string starting with a letter), open the .svg in notepad and replace id=" with id="V for all instances of it in the document. This will insert the character at the beginning of each ID. Gust Justice (talk) 17:57, 14 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Now each district contains its id at the end of each code, example: id="V05120301"/>
However, when I paste in the colour code rows abow the start of the “ <g “ line, it still doesn’t work. It still only shows each district with the colour black once opened.
The colour code is written like this:
<style>
V01140000{fill:#F8A0AB;}
V01140101{fill:#F68996;}
V01140102{fill:#F68996;}
</style>
Is it because I need to remove the “uppsamlingsdistrikt” that doesn’t have a geographic area? Or if I’m reading the notepad++ right, it seems that it doesn’t read/compute the colour codes at all, any tips? TheSwedishEditor (talk) 18:31, 14 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
The uppsamlingsdistrikter shouldn't affect things. I think the issue might be is that you haven't prefaced each line with a "#" sign. E.g. it should be "#V01140000{fill:#F8A0AB;}", not "V01140000{fill:#F8A0AB;}". The "#" sign is needed for the code to work properly. This might be a mistake on my part because the wiki formatting changes the sign when used on this page. Gust Justice (talk) 18:38, 14 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so very much for helping a new wikipedia user out! Have learned a lot from you! Now it works as it should! Will perfect the colours a bit! So the only things that I'm still wondering about is:
1. How did you add the colour graph in the bottom right?
2. How does on upload an .svg file to a wikipedia-article? Should it first be here on wikimedia? TheSwedishEditor (talk) 18:49, 14 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
And a third question, what do I do if 2 or more parties received the exact same votes in a district? Can one sort it out? TheSwedishEditor (talk) 18:58, 14 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
  1. I recommend just copying existing keys from other maps, and changing the vote percentages, parties, and colors as needed. The way you actually make the color key from scratch is by just constructing it in Inkscape by making the relevant rectangles in a grid with the neccesary spacing.
  2. I upload all my election maps to Wikimedia Commons. I believe almost all files on Wikipedia have to be uploaded there. Once uploaded to there, it can be used in articles on Wikipedia.
  3. The approach I usually take is to just have a special color to indicate exact ties. There arguably are better approaches than this, but having a separate color is the simplest way of dealing with it, and it happens rarely enough that it's not too big of a deal.

UK New boundaries

[edit]

Hi; noticed you removed the background from the map i posted. You may not have noticed but it was there as it was the best way i could think of at the time to clip the boundaries to the coast. I don't know if you know how to do this without using an overlay (it was too many points to just subtract) but if you do then it'd be great if you could? EnglishPoliticalPerson (talk) 16:01, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Spanish 2023 Election Map

[edit]

Hi, I wanted to ask how do you add colors to the maps like the seats, provinces, and color bars for the parties on this page [1]. Can you please explain because I want to learn? Thanks! (talk) 21:20, 23 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

I can't really give a complete guide, but at its core you can do all of it in Inkscape, which I use to make all of my maps. My encouragement to anyone wanting to make vector election maps is to just get started and learn as you go. As to the individual elements, such as the circles and color bars, it requires learning how you create those in Inkscape, for which guides exist. The base map itself can be made in multiple ways. For anyone getting startest the easiest is to just download those that exist on Wikimedia Commons. Otherwise you may need to use other software or manually trace the boundaries of the maps. 2019 general election

[edit]

Hello Gust Justice. I have with great excitement seen your maps for the 2022 Danish general election and would just like to encourage you to make similar maps for the 2019 election.--Marginataen (talk) 16:44, 22 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the feedback and the suggestion. I actually had not considered doing choropleth maps for older elections. I definitely would be able to do it, at least for the elections going back to 1979, for which the data is released in a machine readable format. But I can't make any promises on as to when I will do it. Gust Justice (talk) 17:01, 22 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Det lyder godt. Synes i hvert fald det kunne være meget relevant for 2001-, 2015- og 2019-valget. Marginataen (talk) 21:40, 27 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
If you do them again, I'm not sure that it makes sense to include Greenland and the Faroes as Danish political parties cannot even run there and vice versa. Don’t know what your thoughts are? Marginataen (talk) 13:38, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Folkeafstemning 1971 - Opstillingskredse.svg

[edit]

Hello Gust Justice,

thank you for your very nice map on the 1972 referendum in Denmark. I have noticed that in the map there is >70% support of joining the EEC in Greenland but in fact just the opposite was the case (>70% rejection). Greetings --Furfur Diskussion 12:35, 27 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

I think you might be conflating the two. Folkeafstemning 1971 - Opstillingskredse.svg is for the 1971 Danish electoral age referendum. The file for the 1972 EEC referendum is File:Folkeafstemning 1972 - Opstillingskredse.svg, where Greenland is colored with the 70%+ rejecting color. Gust Justice (talk) 12:42, 27 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Oh, indeed. I was not aware that there were two referendums. And of course 1971 is not 1972. I am sorry for bothering you. You are correct. --Furfur Diskussion 13:42, 27 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Spanish general election maps - Anchuras exclave

Hello there, I just noticed that the Spanish general election maps (except the one depicting the results of the latest one) have a small error, since the Ciudad Real exclave of Anchuras [2] is colored the same way as the province of Badajoz. @MP DDT Thanks for pointing it out and for the feedback. I have been vaguely aware that there are minor inaccuracies with the base map I have used for the Spanish election maps. I haven't fixed it because I don't know how many such instances there are.
Having said that, I do want to fix it, although I would ask if you know whether there are other such instances where the boundaries are inaccurate? Gust Justice (talk) 17:29, 7 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

2024 EU parliament election map

It actually is colored in the EPP's shading for 40-45%. I know dark blue is how the ECR is often depicted, but on the map ECR is colored slightly more purple compared to the EPP. This is isn't ideal, but is what I found to be the best way of shading by vote share without the colors overlapping too much. Gust Justice (talk) 17:46, 30 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi! I was wondering what your source is for the share of votes by political group? Europe Elects, for example, provides differing projections. Thanks! --Snowball13 (talk) 11:07, 25 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

I've worked it out by taking the votes for the different parties, but where a party/coalition has been affiliated with multiple political groups or european political parties, I have proportionally distributed the votes to the respective groups, typically in proportion to the share of seats corresponding to each group. In the case of e.g. Poland, I have not assigned all the votes of Third Way to Renew Europe, but have instead done so to EPP and Renew Europe in proportion of the votes received by the individual parties in Third Way. Gust Justice (talk) 11:41, 25 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

How do you do those maps??

[edit]

Hello, Sorry for this question that can seem quite stupid but what do you use to do those maps (i mean like a software) and where do you find the layers ? I would like to try doing my owns but I dont know where to start. Thanks in avance ! Dadadumas (talk) 15:13, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I should probably do a full guide at some point, but here is a very rough summary: As you mention, I start with getting the base map. Sometimes you can get this from existing files on Wikimedia Commons, other times you need to download a shapefile, typically from the government of the country in question, and rarely I have even had to painstakingly draw the boundaries myself. If you get a shapefile, i recommend using https://mapshaper.org/. There you can change the projection, simplify the shapes if needed, and most importantly, download the map as a .svg. Once you have a .svg I use Inkscape to make the map itself. There you can quite easily change the colors of the shapes (constituencies, counties, municipalities, etc.) and add other elements as appropriate. Overall I would recommend just getting started and trying it out! The way I learned to make election maps in Inkscape was by copying the styles others had used and then gradually learning more and more things. Gust Justice (talk) 23:32, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Okay, i'll try it, thanks you so much ! Dadadumas (talk) 17:47, 13 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Sorry to bother you but I'm not able to find tthe shapefile you're talking about... I tried to put one of your map on mapshapar but it doesn't work. Could you help me or direct me to your guide if you did one Dadadumas (talk) 13:17, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
It depends on what you want a map of. There are various websites that contain shapefiles for various administrative divisions, constituencies, etc. You cannot upload a .svg file to mapshaper. To edit that (i.e. like my maps) you have to open it in inkscape. Gust Justice (talk) 16:03, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I made it using Inkscape. I used one of the many existing maps (can't remember exactly which) of Swiss cantons as the base. Gust Justice (talk) 21:48, 13 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
but did you use an election map originally?
I'm trying to do a similar swiss election map for an alt history scenario for fun, so I'd greatly appreciate it if you could give me as much information as possible.
Thank you. L'rd Of The Fish (talk) 11:07, 20 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@L'rd Of The Fish I made the overall template by myself, by adapting the map from a different file. I didn't use someone else's election map. Gust Justice (talk) 11:44, 20 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Denmark 2021

I think Glostrup Kommune should be bright red in this map, as the position of mayor switched from Venstre to Soc.dem: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Danmarkkommunal2021.svg --Henrik Hansen (talk) 08:53, 12 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for pointing it out. I have fixed it. Gust Justice (talk) 14:18, 15 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
