English: Joseph Hardy Neesima (February 12, 1843 – January 23, 1890), whose Japanese name was Niijima Jō (新島 襄), was a Japanese educator and Christian missionary during the Meiji era, a retainer of the Itakura clan of Yasunaka, and the founder of Doshisha University.
