Katie Prout
Katie Prout (she/her/hers) is a features writer for the Chicago Reader. She received her BA from Kalamazoo College, her MFA in Nonfiction from the University of Iowa, and now lives in Chicago.
In 2020, Katie’s profile of Chicago blues artist Mary Lane, copublished with the Chicago Reader and Belt Magazine, was anthologized in Dispatches from the Rust Belt: Volume III. In 2023, her reported essay on her struggle to find a psychiatrist who accepts Medicaid, copublished with the Chicago Reader and the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, was included in the anthology Going for Broke: Living on the Edge in the World’s Richest Country. Currently, she's working on a book about the intersection of the overdose crisis and homelessness in Chicago, via the lens of her own family's experience with addiction and economic precarity, called Life and Death in the Loop.
