Cover reveal for Her Haunted Heart Unabridged and Post Disaster Update

Justin T Coons knocked it out of the park again with that painting! I did the VHS cover effects.

It will go up for preorder probably next weekend. We're looking at a May release. This one will probably be the most altered from the first edition because there were some complaints that it wasn't scary enough. Although ghosts don't deliver the gore like my other demons and big bads, I can definitely up the creep factor!

In other exciting news for this series, I just got word from Fright Night Audio that the audiobook edition of His Final Girl is going into post production, so I'll have a release date soon.

AAAAAND, my former publisher of that series gave me the rights back to His Scream Queen and Her Halloween Party earl, so BOTH books can re-release in 2027!

In other audio news, Claire Glover is going to start narrating Bite At First Sight in late February, so we're probably looking at a summer release for that one as well.

POST DISASTER UPDATE:

It's been a little over a month since it happened. I am still having flashbacks to the tree falling on us. And I am missing Kent so much that it's a stabbing pain in my chest. We're planning his memorial service for April to give his out of state friends and family time to make travel arrangements, though there will be a live stream. I will design the invites and the little pamphlet thingies that people get at funerals. I will also be writing the eulogy and my son, Micah, is going to write a poem.

This is the bedroom Kent and I shared for 12 years (I lived with him for half the week even before my son and I moved in fully back in 2019).

That black pillow with skeletons on it was STILL in the exact spot where I'd been sleeping when the tree came down. Seeing it next to the crater that had fallen down into my son's bedroom before really made me understand why everyone from the emergency crew that came that night to the insurance assessor declared that Micah and I shouldn't have survived.

I am so lucky to have my son. Kent would be so proud of all the little ways he's taking after him and helping me the way Kent would in getting through all of this.

We're in our temporary housing, but I found out that the insurance only covers a set amount of money, so we could be looking for another place in 6 months. We still don't know if the house will be rebuildable, and whether or not we'll get to move back in. I'm going to be looking for another job so we can afford it. I'm also hoping my book sales pick up.

The rubble crew finally got to get started on recovering my things. I got most of my wall o'horror, a lot of my clothes, my baby blanket, and FINALLY my wallet and ID. The cats are doing better and I'll have more pics of the place when we're done unpacking.

Someone got me this adorable coffin cat bed with a scratching post from my post disaster wishlist on Amazon.

Mayhem loves it. She's doing much better after the vet gave her steroid and antibiotic shots. But if her inflammation comes back, I gotta shell out another 2 grand to get the rest of her teeth pulled.

Next weekend I'll have the new edition of Her Haunted Heart available for preorder and hopefully other fun stuff.

I lost the love of my life and dream home all in the same day and I am not okay.

It's taken a long time to send out a newsletter and blog because typing this makes it more real.

On Wednesday, December 17th, at about 5:50 AM, a tree fell on our house and crushed Kent, the love of my life, killing him instantly and trapping me.

The fire rescue guys, the insurance guy, and the engineer who spoke to Kent’s sister all said that neither my son nor I should have survived, especially my son. His bedroom was right below ours and most of our room caved in on top of his, but fell in a circle around him with just enough room for him to get out. I still don’t know how I got out from beneath the tree limbs and roof supports that fell on me.

Aside from a panic attack at the ER and some scrapes and bruises, I wasn't really hurt. The worst was inhaling and swallowing some of that weird foam insulation. Better than fiberglass, I guess.

I couldn't eat or speak much the first couple days after. I'm still having nonverbal periods and memory blocks.

I got super lucky with friends and family taking over. My movie club co-admin set up a Go Fund Me, which is dire because now my son and I are staying at a hotel until temporary housing is found. We won’t know if the house is rebuildable until probably February, and if it is, it could take up to a year before we’re able to move back in. I really hope we can.

I’m going to be partly out of work as I work with the family to handle insurance, contractors, and the daunting task of salvaging and handling all that was left behind. And there's so much the insurance won't cover, like death expenses, only having one running car that needs a ton of work...just...I'm scared and overwhelmed.

The loss of Kent wasn’t just as a life partner, though that is the most painful and irreplaceable. He was the IT Guy for two family businesses as well as for my author website, which is currently down, right when I have a new book release.

I don’t even know how we’re going to handle everything that was lost in that regard, or even if someone could be hired to recover or replace what he built and maintained.

But losing him as a partner still hurts worse.

He was tied with my son in the best things to happen to me. He was like a real life romance hero and supported me in everything I did. He did countless things to make me happy, like painting the house purple. 😭

I'd long gone by my first and middle name for my art and my romance books because I didn't want a man to get credit for anything I did. But then, because Kent encouraged and helped my author career in every way, like taking care of responsibilities when I wrote, cheering on my progress, giving me and teaching me Photoshop for covers and promo stuff, assisting me at cons, the list goes on. So when I needed a pen name for my non-romance horror stuff, I took his.

We were supposed to get married for real. He made me a lilac wood staff just like the mage characters in my Brides of Prophecy series, which is tantamount to a proposal. The fact that he listened and remembered that detail still blows my mind.

This is my fave pic of us together because even though the book signing for One Bite Per Night was a failure due to the publisher postponing the release until readers forgot about me, being too broke to market it because I'd recently escaped a bad marriage, and the bookstore putting me and my adult vampire romance in the kids' toy section, KENT came to my signing and let me get a pic with him. I'd based Vincent's looks on him back when I crushed on him from afar, so having him there was a fantasy come true.

I really don't know how to go on without him, but I have to. While there’s a huge painful hole where my heart used to be, I’m going to do my best to keep living and keep writing. I owe that to my readers and Kent, who encouraged me every step of the way wouldn’t want me to quit. I will also live for my son. He turned out to be a really good and awesome man, and hopefully some of you can meet him when I'm able to attend conventions again.

On a happier note, we’ve recovered all of our four cats and got them microchipped ASAP. Shadowpaw and Mischief were easy to get as they are the most social, and then we got Mayhem, who I’m most worried about because she was most attached to Kent. Chaos was the toughest to catch. We had to use a trap for him. Both he and Mayhem have lost weight. I'm going to give them some of Phantom's prescription food when I get it from the house.

What's next in writing.

2026 will be a big year for audiobooks. My summer camp slasher romance, His Final Girl, my regency vampire romance, Bite At First Sight, and my short Brides of Prophecy prequel, Tesemini, will all be releasing in audio in the coming year.

I will be re-releasing my haunted house romance, Her Haunted Heart, in late spring/early summer.

I will also have to work on my Brides of Prophecy 11, but that one will probably take longer and come out in 2027. And there's also my lighthouse horror novel that I'd outlined and started. My agent will hopefully be done reading my coming of age horror novel, The Graveyard Girls, my first full-length Brooklyn Ann Butler novel. Then, if she doesn't hate it, she'll hopefully find a good home for it.

When my mom died, my muse went historical and fluffy to get as far away from my grief as possible. With the loss of Kent, I don't know if I'll shy away from romance or dive further in to feel like falling in love with him over and over (even though the majority of my characters aren't based on him, and even fewer based on me, the happy and healthy love he and I shared had an indelible impact on my writing). I dedicate every romance to my mom to give her all the happily ever-afters she didn't get in life. Maybe I'll start writing some for myself.

As for my horror, I don't know how this loss will affect those stories. I DO know that I still love fun monsters, supernatural spookiness, cheesy tropes, and a touch of feminism. The characters in my lighthouse book are two women, so maybe that will be a good temporary escape from the pain of losing a man who was almost too good to be true.

Anyway, if you've read all of this, thank you for keeping me company in what will probably be the worst time of my life and thank you for being one of my readers. You're a big part of what keeps me from curling up on the ground and giving up.

I will try to have that cover reveal for Her Haunted Heart done by the weekend.

I talked to my wonderful narrator for my Scandals With Bite series and we're going to get to work on adapting book 3, Bite At First Sight in late February, so hopefully we can release it in Summer or Fall of 2026

In Horror news, the next Final Couples book will release in May 2026. I will have a cover reveal soon!

And hopefully I'll have a release date for the audiobook version of His Final Girl soon too. All I know now is that it's currently in production.

In the meantime, I've found narrators that I'd like for my Brides of Prophecy series, but due to budget and to see how we work together, we're going to start with my prequel short, Tesemini, that is free with my newsletter. If you haven't read it yet, go subscribe HERE!

I will also be releasing my killer waitress story from Pretend You Don't See Her in the fall. Which is around when the next HOH anthology, Highway of Haunts comes out.

As for Brides of Prophecy 11, that one probably won't be out until 2027 because the complexity of the world has made them a little harder to write. I want to ensure that there's no more 11th hour scrambling because the book got bigger than I'd planned and I'm not too exhausted to celebrate it.

I am NEVER going to do a book release this time of year again, that's for sure! As my therapist has declared, "October is Brooklyn's self-care month." And then because I have a huge family and Kent and I host both Thanksgiving and Xmas dinners at our house, that really cuts into my writing time.

Although I have so many projects to work on, I am going to do some self care. Read some books, finish my David Lynch scratchboard portrait, and watch the new Stranger Things and other shows and movies I missed while chained to my desk.

HIS FINAL GIRL AUDIO NEWS!
The narrator for the audiobook of my summer camp slasher romance, His Final Girl is Cindy Kay!
She's won a shit ton of awards, and even though she mostly does serious historical and contemporary romance, she did amazing at conveying the dread and scary vibes in her audition.
Fright Night Audio told me she expects to be finished in December. I don't know if that means the audiobook will come out in December too or not. This is my first time going through a publisher for an audiobook.
I will keep everyone posted.

TURKEY RECIPE!
My recipe is pretty popular this time of year, but now when you google "Brooklyn Ann turkey recipe" their stupid AI says that because I'm an author I don't have recipes.
So here it is:
Required Materials:
Roasting Pan with a lid or Aluminum Foil
Turkey Baster
Meat Thermometer

Ingredients:
1: 15-20lb turkey (If larger may need to increase other ingredients)
1-2 stalks celery
1 large orange
1 onion (I prefer sweet)
1/2 to 1 head of garlic
1 big carrot or 8-10 baby carrots
1/2 to 1/4 bottle of ginger ale (2 liter)
2 cans chicken stock
1 bay leaf
2 tbs. thyme
2 tbs. parsley
2 tbs. sage
1 tbs. lemon pepper
1 tbs. Rosemary
1 tbs. Seasoned Salt (Johnny's or Lawry's is best!)
Butter

(I know it's a long list, but it's totally worth it!)
Okay, here we go.

Preheat oven to 350
Mix thyme, sage, rosemary, parsley, lemon pepper, and seasoning salt in a small bowl
Chop the onion, carrot, and celery
Peel the garlic and split it into segments
Peel the orange and split it into segments

If your roasting pan doesn't have a lid, line the pan with enough foil to cover the turkey.
Remove the neck and giblets from turkey
Rub the herb mixture inside both neck and rear cavities of the turkey and a little on the outside.
Stuff turkey with chopped onion, carrot, celery, garlic, orange segments, and bay leaf.
Place turkey in roasting pan.
Slide slices of butter under the skin of the turkey breast
Pour all chicken broth and half required ginger ale into the cavity.

Truss the turkey and pour more ginger ale over bird and around it.

Either cover the turkey with roasting pan lid, or make a foil tent over the bird, but try not to have the foil touch it.
Baste periodically and remove foil to allow turkey to brown 45 min to 1 hr before done.
Turkey is done when thermometer inserted into thickest part of the thigh reads 180 degrees.

Here is estimated cooking time by weight:
10-15 lbs = 3 3/4 -4 1/2 hrs. 15-22lbs = 4 1/2- 5 hrs
22-24lbs = 5- 5 1/2 hrs. 24-29lbs = 5 1/2- 6 1/4 hrs

When turkey is done, remove from oven, cover, and let stand 10- 15 min before carving. This allows the juices to resettle.

Bonus Gravy Recipe:
Ingredients: (To taste and as needed)
Turkey drippings/ marinade
Milk
Cornstarch
Parsley
Thyme
Sage
Salt (if needed)
Black Pepper

Using the turkey baster, remove as much liquid from turkey as you need, skim off excess fat, and heat it to boiling in a medium saucepan
Mix cornstarch with milk and add to boiling turkey drippings,
Slowly lower the heat and blend with a whisk.
thicken to desired texture and in the meantime, season to taste with herbs and pepper. You can also cheat a little by supplementing with turkey gravy packets. This is especially handy if you are having a lot of guests.

IMPORTANT UPDATE ON TO WED A WARRIOR

I hate to do this, as this also happened with Redeeming the Angel, but I had to postpone the release date of To Wed a Warrior to December 12th. On the bright side, the reason is that the book is going to be longer than anticipated and I am not nearly as far behind on that one as I was with the 10th Brides of Prophecy novel.

However, this lesson has taught me that November and December releases are NOT for me. Therefore, unless a miracle happens, Brides of Prophecy 11, won't be be coming out in 2026.

On the bright side, I will have a few awesome releases of other stuff, and more audio releases.

Life News:

Halloween was fantastic. My Lady in the Radiator costume turned out well. Though I made a few errors with the prosthetic, it was still fun. The grayscale body paint was a pain to remove, lol!

I didn't get pictures of my graveyard setup, but I made a lot of videos. Kent got hold of professional stage lights for almost nothing, which worked wonders in making my mostly Dollar Store and thrift store decorations pop.

In a former hospital wing turned daycare, the ghost of a boy communicates to the kids through a deactivated call button.

Ten-year-old Bree Thorne is unhappy to spend her summer vacation at the Lychhurst Hospital Daycare that her mother runs. Life News:

I've got a good start on my Halloween decorating. I've been featuring each day's progress on my youtube channel

But check out how far I got!

My event at the Night Market was pretty successful. I sold some books, more trippy bubble toys, and some candles.

With my social anxiety and agoraphobia, it's really hard for me to do events, so I'm proud of myself that I managed to do two this year.

Another difficulty is that Coeur d'Alene and Spokane don't have many cons for horror or romance authors and artists. So most of the time I've had to travel, which has been impossible with my current finances. Still, I'm hoping to get my car road trip worthy again so I can attend things in Western Washington, Oregon, and maybe even Nevada.

Next week, I'll show off my Halloween decorating progress, and the progress on this year's Halloween costume. I'm also hoping to have an update on the audio auditions Fright Night Audio had for His Final Girl.

Life News:

I colored my hair! It sounds funny, but I colored the grays at my temples a more uniform silver, then dyed the rest a black with purple that only shows up in the sunlight.

The streaks didn't turn out exactly how I wanted them (the silver dye didn't take at the roots, so they look yellow but luckily my bangs cover them), so I will have to re-bleach and recolor them, but I have to wait a couple weeks and give my hair time to recover.

Today I'm starting decorating for Halloween. Between my smoke machine and the crazy, professional concert lights and lasers that Kent got hold of, my house leveled up big time.

I'm also going to see Nightmare on Elm Street in the theaters in a couple hours. It will be my first time seeing Freddy on the big screen, and because this was the first horror movie I ever saw AND was what started my bonding with my mom over horror films, I'm bouncing between ecstatic excitement and sentimental tears. I'm TOTALLY gonna wear my Freddy sweater!

Next Friday, I'll be releasing my short haunted daycare story, "The Boy From Limbo" and, of course be signing books at the Haunted Hall at the Night Market in Spokane.

I FINALLY got the rights back to the first two books in my B Mine series, with the rights to the next two coming one at a time, in spring of 2026 and late 2027, respectively.

However, to give a cushion for delays, I'm going to re-release book 2 in May of 2026, book 3 in 2027, and book 4 in 2028.

Book 1, His Final Girl, will re-release on Friday. This new edition is completely revamped, with a gorgeous new cover (painting by Justin T. Coons), a shiny blurb from the incredible Jeff Strand, and a little bit more gore, in addition to other changes.

You can preorder it on Amazon now, and it will be live on all the other retailers on Friday.

I don't have much for life news as it's been just me with my hair on fire trying to keep my head above water financially and preparing for all these releases.

Next newsletter will, of course be about said release, but updates on To Wed a Warrior will be coming too.

Life News:

My birthday week was awesome. I got to hang out with my best friend last Sunday night. We had a sleepover and were transported back to being kids again.

Then, on my actual B-day, I went out on a date with Kent and finally got to wear this awesome dress I found last winter. It's the same one Rebekah Del Rio wore when she sang "No Stars" on Twin Peaks: The Return.

I also got the most amazing score for my goth garden.

Due to Kent accidentally breaking one of my tiles for my address column (he's finally working on it so it might actually be installed before the end of the year!) I had to go to Lowe's to get another. I found two pots of black mondo grass in the clearance section for $7 each! And because it had already reproduced a ton, I got like $60-$70 of black mondo grass for $14! I'm so excited. I wanted more but did NOT have the funds to get more yet.

Here's all the plants I got from two overstuffed pots. I left a couple big guys to plant sooner in the garden. The two white ones were babies that were born upside-down. I will find out if they'll take and thrive now that they have some sun.

I also have some big news about my B Mine series, but that will come next week.

My event was a lot of fun, but due to a competing big local event, not as many people showed up as I'd hoped. My table was cute, though!

Behold!

It's set in the Brides of Prophecy universe in Wurrakia, the Westeros-style country full of knights and courtly medieval stuff, where only women are allowed to practice magic and the hero is my homage to Sandor Clegane from the Song of Ice and Fire books.

Life News:

I wasn't able to do a newsletter last week because I was busy visiting my Grandma at the rehab hospital and bringing food to Grandpa. She is recovering well and is finally back home. Thanks to everyone who offered well wishes.

Our boss-kitty, Mayhem had her surgery last week and is recovering well and is gradually able to eat more and more without pain. My eternal gratitude goes to all who donated to her surgery fund.

The audiobook fund is back up on my Ko-fi page with all of the previous donations to that one accounted for. Currently I'm trying to get Bite at First Sight funded. You can donate HERE.

Life News:

We had a few bits of sorrow in the past two weeks, which is why you didn't hear from me last weekend.

First, Mayhem, who I'd mentioned in the last newsletter was losing weight because it seemed like a bad tooth was bothering her. The vet diagnoses is stomatitis, which means she's basically become allergic to her own teeth, so she needs them all pulled. For those of you who saw my fundraiser for the surgery and contributed, I can't thank you enough. There are two more freebies in my store, Wrenching Fate, and my short ghost story, My Fairlady, so I hope you grabbed them.

Although I did meet my goal, the fees were a little higher than I expected, so we will be short if the bill is closer to 1900, and we'll also still have to shell out for her medications and the wet food diet all four cats will have to be on for the following week after her surgery (we can't risk her messing up the stitches by going for dry food), you can still donate HERE. And if you do, grab the freebies!

About the Audiobook Fund:

Since Kofi only lets me have one fundraiser going at a time, I had to take down the audiobook fund for Bite At First Sight. However, I still have the funds that had been donated thus far and will be taking down Mayhem's fund after her surgery (in case I need to raise the goal and ask for more help with that) and then restoring the audiobook fund goal with the already donated funds still tracked.

Writing News:

I still managed to get some writing in and am about a quarter done.

On the horror front, I heard from Kandisha Press that PRETEND YOU DON'T SEE HER: An Anthology of Invisible Women will release in the fall. There will be a cover reveal soon! Also waiting to hear back from my agent regarding The Graveyard Girls.

ART NEWS:

My slipcase for my signed Firestarter is almost done!

It fits perfectly!

I also discovered that white carbon paper is a thing, which made the lettering process work for me. I still need to do the spine, though.

I have plans for doing many more slipcases, but I also have to finish my David Lynch portrait, then do a secret art project, and, of course, all the writing!

Goth Garden Update:

I've also been doing some gardening. I put up 10 feet of this cute fencing and got my goth plants in the ground.

I've been trying to get more of that fencing so I can take it all the way to the tree, but Temu keeps sending me the wrong kind. But I keep getting credits when they refund me, so I can keep playing until I get the right stuff.

Life news:

The boss cat of the house, and Kent's primary "owner," Mayhem, has a bad tooth. She lost a ton of weight, which she really couldn't afford because she is already a small cat. We did get her eating softer things that won't hurt her mouth and discovered that she has a bad tooth.

We got her a vet appointment on Monday, and it's likely I'll be doing a fundraiser for the costs of getting her bad tooth or teeth pulled.

Writing News:

I did get in some good writing days and passed the 22% mark in To Wed a Warrior. This book is so fun and so cute!

On the horror front, I'm still waiting for a release date for the women in horror anthology. Also waiting to hear back from my agent regarding The Graveyard Girls.

OMG! My art is in a book! Plus adventures in crafting.

A while back, I was able to announce that I'd gotten to do a scratchboard art piece for Carrie's Legacy, a limited edition book by Lividian Publication on the impact of Stephen King's Carrie on authors and artists.

Just yesterday, the book arrived and I am still in awe that I'm in there!

I also had some fine art prints made of my piece. There are still a couple left in my store!

Crafting adventures!

I've been wanting to get into slipcase making for awhile. My first goal was to make a case for my signed first edition of Stephen King's Firestarter.

My friend loaned me a cool cutting tool, my boyfriend 3D printed me these thingies that hold the corners in place during the gluing process. But I ended up making my measurements wrong and the case was too big for Firestarter.

So I ended up with a case for The Institute. I am making my second attempt at cutting boards for Firestarter today.

I also got cat molds and made some more cat candles and more skull candles.

I don't have the cat candles listed in my store yet, but the skulls are!
