Sure, there will be points with a lot more shots, and less shots, but the average is wonderful – it gives us instant perspective on where things really are situated. So let’s go through an obvious progression of a doubles point to figure out what’s really happening here.

You start a doubles point with a serve – that’s a given. You can bank on that happening.

Then comes the return. That’s also a given. Gotta have that.

The rest of the point, however, is no given at all.
