The Project

The Associated Students (A.S.) of San Diego State University is dedicated to enhancing the college experience by providing students with access to state-of-the-art recreational, social, and leadership opportunities. The newly built Aztec Recreation Center (ARC) is an all-electric, sustainable facility designed to support student well-being through fitness, wellness programs, and community engagement. As a student-directed organization, A.S. ensures that the ARC serves as a hub for recreation and personal development, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment for SDSU students.

In addition to promoting student health and wellness, A.S. is committed to sustainability and environmental responsibility. With financing by BQuest Foundation and by partnering with the SunForAll Program, A.S. installed a 121.5 kW solar system on the ARC’s distinctive "sawtooth" rooftop. The solar panels are strategically positioned to maximize energy generation, while north-facing windows allow natural daylight to illuminate the facility, reducing the need for artificial lighting. The savings generated from this solar array will be reinvested into further energy efficiency and decarbonization projects, as well as professional development opportunities for student leaders.

By integrating sustainability into recreation, A.S. ensures that the ARC not only provides a space for students to thrive physically and socially but also exemplifies responsible environmental stewardship. With its commitment to student engagement, leadership development, and sustainability, the Associated Students ARC building continues to enhance the SDSU experience, empowering students to lead healthier lives while creating a positive impact on the campus and beyond.
