B/R NHL Trade Board for September 2025

Lyle Richardson Sep 1, 2025

As the calendar flips to September, NHL fans can look forward to the start of training camps by mid-month. And not a moment too soon, as a dire dearth of real hockey news made for a rather dull August.

That's particularly true in the NHL rumor mill. The last trade was on July 25 involving a minor deal between the San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche. Since we published our August 2025 Trade Block Big Board, speculation about possible player movement all but dried up.

Many of the players on our previous list haven't appeared in media rumor chatter. As a result, we've dropped noteworthy stars such as Dougie Hamilton of the New Jersey Devils, Erik Karlsson of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Nazem Kadri of the Calgary Flames from our current list.

We've also removed Penguins Bryan Rust, Rickard Rakell, and Tristan Jarry, Yegor Chinakhov of the Columbus Blue Jackets, Nico Daws of the Devils, Evan Rodrigues of the Florida Panthers, Samuel Girard of the Colorado Avalanche, and Mike Matheson of the Montreal Canadiens.

Marco Rossi also came off our list. The 23-year-old center was a restricted free agent, but signed a three-year contract extension with the Minnesota Wild.

Some of those players could resurface in the rumor mill once training camps open this month. Meanwhile, several notables such as Jason Robertson of the Dallas Stars and Rasmus Andersson of the Calgary Flames remain, joined by some new names that recently surfaced as trade candidates.

Follow along as we examine the eight trade candidates for September 2025 and rank them according to the likelihood of getting moved.

8. Jordan Kyrou, St. Louis Blues

Earlier this summer, Jordan Kyrou of the St. Louis Blues was frequently mentioned as a trade candidate. The 28-year-old winger appeared on our June and July Trade Boards.

The media chatter reached its peak during the 2025 NHL Draft in late June, with speculation linking him to the Montreal Canadiens. However, they acquired Kyrou's teammate, Zack Bolduc, in exchange for defenseman Logan Mailloux on July 1.

On the same day, Kyrou's full no-trade clause went into effect, giving him complete control over his situation. It brought an end to the trade rumors, dropping him off our August Trade Block Big Board.

However, The Athletic's Jeremy Rutherford hasn't fully closed the door on a Kyrou trade, indicating several teams remain interested in the speedy, 30-goal winger. While a trade remains doubtful, Kyrou will still be worth monitoring in the rumor mill during this season.

7. Jason Robertson, Dallas Stars

Appearing at No. 15 on our August NHL Trade Block Big Board, Jason Robertson surfaced as a trade candidate amid speculation suggesting the Dallas Stars might trade the 26-year-old winger in a cost-cutting move. He's in the final season of his contract with a $7.8 million cap hit for 2025-26 and lacks no-trade protection.

Robertson will become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights next summer. The Stars are cap-compliant this season and aren't under pressure to move Robertson this season. Nevertheless, he could be expensive to re-sign, given his role among their leading scorers.

Sean Shapiro of DLLS Sports stated the Stars looked into Robertson's trade value earlier this summer. Appearing on The Sick Podcast – The Eye Test on Aug. 12, Shapiro felt that the Stars would want a significant return for the high-scoring winger.

The Stars seem content to retain Robertson and see how he performs under new head coach Glen Gulutzan. Nevertheless, the ongoing media trade chatter and uncertainty over his contract situation could keep his name in the rumor mill throughout this season.

6. Fabian Lysell, Boston Bruins

Boston Bruins v Pittsburgh Penguins

On Aug. 18, David Staples of the Edmonton Journal shared a rumor from Court Lalonde of the Bruins Diehards podcast involving forward Fabian Lysell of the Boston Bruins. According to Lalonde, rumors were swirling suggesting the Bruins were cooking up a trade with the Edmonton Oilers involving the 22-year-old winger.

Lysell was chosen by the Bruins in the first round (21st overall) of the 2021 NHL Draft. Since then, he's had difficulty cracking their roster regularly, appearing in just 12 games last season.

Staples noted the rumored asking price from the Oilers would be a young winger like Matt Savoie or Vasily Podkolzin. He doesn't consider Lysell a fit in Edmonton unless he becomes an aggressive two-way checker like Savoie.

Lysell probably isn't heading to the Oilers. However, he could become a trade chip for the Bruins if they need to address a roster issue at some point during this season.

5. Brandt Clarke, Los Angeles Kings

Los Angeles Kings v Edmonton Oilers - Game Six

The Los Angeles Kings underwent a shakeup to their blue line this summer. Vladislav Gavrikov departed for the New York Rangers as a free agent, and Jordan Spence was traded to the Ottawa Senators. Replacing them are free-agent signings Cody Ceci and Brian Dumoulin.

Promising Brandt Clarke is projected to be the Kings' right-shot defenseman on their second pairing. The 22-year-old played in his first full NHL season in 2024-25, netting 33 points in 78 games.

However, there's speculation that the Kings may have considered trading Brandt this summer. During his Aug. 19 appearance on the DFO Rundown, Michael Russo of The Athletic said there were points during the offseason when the Kings weighed that possibility.

Russo said that Kings' general manager Ken Holland wants to watch Clarke's performance this season before making a decision. That could make him a player of interest in this season's rumor mill, especially if the Kings struggle in the Western Conference playoff race.

4. Mason McTavish, Anaheim Ducks

5 of 7
Edmonton Oilers v Anaheim Ducks

The lack of a new contract between the Anaheim Ducks and Mason McTavish has ensured the restricted free-agent center remains a fixture in the offseason rumor mill. The 22-year-old is coming off his entry-level contract and lacks arbitration rights.

McTavish sat at No. 5 on our August Trade Block Big Board. His physical two-way play would make him a tempting target for an offer sheet, but the Ducks' $20.6 million in cap space for this season ensures they would match any offer. Any attempt by a rival club is a pointless exercise.

Interested teams may have contacted the Ducks to gauge McTavish's availability via trade. On Aug. 18, Sportsnet's Ryan Dixon listed the Detroit Red Wings, Carolina Hurricanes, Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, Montreal Canadiens, and Philadelphia Flyers as possible suitors.

Three days later, however, The Athletic's Eric Stephens reported the Ducks intend to re-sign McTavish, indicating the two sides have gone back and forth with contract proposals. While other teams might covet the young center's skills, Stephens noted that those skills are just as important to the Ducks.

3 & 2: Pavel Zacha and Casey Mittelstadt, Boston Bruins

6 of 7
Boston Bruins v Buffalo Sabres
Former Buffalo Sabres center Casey Mittelstadt pursues Boston Bruins forward Pavel Zacha during a December 2023 game. Mittelstadt and Zacha are now Bruins teammates.

The Boston Bruins missed the playoffs last season, ending their eight-year postseason streak. Management made several offseason additions, bringing in veteran forwards Viktor Arvidsson, Tanner Jeannot, Sean Kuraly and Michael Eyessimont.

They could have other moves in store. On Aug. 10, RG.Org's James Murphy cited a source claiming Casey Mittelstadt could be a trade candidate. The 26-year-old center was acquired (along with prospect William Zellers) from the Colorado Avalanche at the trade deadline, but some observers think Zellers was their true target.

Murphy also mentioned Bruins forward Pavel Zacha has come up in trade rumors since the 2025 NHL Draft in late June. On Aug. 11, Matt Sekeres of the Sekeres & Price noted the rumors about Zacha and Mittelstadt. His guest Cam Robinson felt either player would be an upgrade at center for the Vancouver Canucks.

It's unlikely the Bruins will move Mittelstadt or Zacha without getting a decent forward in return, as it would deplete their top-six forward lines. However, they could hit the trade block if the Bruins struggle to bounce back from last year's disappointing season.

1. Rasmus Andersson, Calgary Flames

7 of 7
Calgary Flames v San Jose Sharks

A fixture in the rumor mill since May, Rasmus Andersson enters September as the player we believe is the most likely to be traded this season. On Aug. 27, Michael Russo of The Athletic reported Flames captain Mikael Backlund believes the 28-year-old defenseman is playing his final season for Calgary.

Backlund said that the Flames will want value in a trade return, while Andersson seeks a big contract. "So he wants to play well. The team wants him to play well. So, just go out and play," Backlund said, adding that the blueliner doesn't want his contract situation to become a distraction for his teammates.

Andersson is eligible for unrestricted free-agent status next July. Contract extension talks between his camp and Flames management broke down in June. His salary-cap hit for this season is $4.55 million, and he carries a six-team no-trade clause.

The fact that Andersson will likely be moved before the trade deadline ensures he'll remain the subject of speculation this season. That chatter from the media will be difficult for Andersson and his teammates to ignore.
