Aspen Creek Wiki
There were a lot of stories about the Moor. He was almost a folk hero -- or a villain -- among the wolves.

–-Cry Wolf

Asil Moreno, whose actual name is Hussan and who is best known as the Moor, is a very old werewolf in the Marrock's Aspen Creek Pack.

Appearance & Personality[]

Asil is extremely beautiful and also very vain about it.

"His face was refined and elegant, his skin was teak and sunlight. His nose and black eyes said Middle Eastern, though his accent had been pure Spanish. He looked to be 23 or 24." (Cry Wolf)

Asil is rather wildly conceited about himself and his abilities, and not afraid to say so. But at the same time, he is in fact one of the most powerful wolves in the world. As he says of himself:

"Just because he was vain did not mean he was wrong." (Asil and the Not-Date)

History[]

"I am descended from African Berbers and people from the Arabian Peninsula. I am thus a Spanish Moor, however antiquated the term." -- Asil, Asil and the Not-Date

Asil was born shortly before Charles Martel (Charlemagne's grandfather) won the Battle of Tours in AD 732 (Cry Wolf), making him about 1,300 years old. There are a handful of wolves as old as he, but not many; the three elder Cornicks (Bran, Samuel, and Sherwood) may be the only wolves who are actually older.

He was mated to an Omega werewolf, Sarai, but she was killed by their foster daughter Mariposa. Shortly thereafter, he turned his pack over to his son, Hussan ibn Hussan, and wandered for a while. It is unknown if his son was born before he met Sarai, to Sarai when she was human, or to another woman in the 200 years since Sarai's death. We do know that Hussan is the second-oldest of six Spanish Alpha werewolves, so it could be either, but before Sarai seems more likely. (Hunting Ground)

He traveled to the US to join Bran's pack, saying Bran would have to kill him soon. This happened shortly after Mercy left, so about 15 years before Moon Called, and Bran has not obliged him yet.

Books[]

Cry Wolf[]

Besides badgering Bran to kill him, one reason he joined the Aspen Creek Pack was because of disturbing dreams he was having about his dead mate Sarai and Mariposa, the witch who killed her. Despite the impossibility of it, he learns that Mariposa is very much alive and wants to capture Asil ... or maybe Bran, now that he is within reach.

Hunting Ground[]

Asil does not appear in this story, but we meet his son, Hussan ibn Hussan, and learn that Asil's original given name was also Hussan.

Roses in Winter (short)[]

Asil befriends Kara Beckworth and helps her accept and learn to control her werewolf nature.

Frost Burned[]

Asil is sent to the Tri-Cities to assist Mercy when the Columbia Basin Pack is captured.

Burn Bright[]

Asil and Anna are on one of the teams tracking down the Wildlings to help uncover a traitor.

Wild Sign[]

Bran leaves Asil in charge while he goes to help Charles, Anna, and Tag fight the Singer in the Woods.

Asil's Blind Dates (shorts)[]

A set of "Concerned Friends" unexpectedly and without permission set Asil up on a series of blind dates to shake him out of his rut, and the dates "somehow altered from challenges to missions" as each one goes in a wildly unexpected direction, sometimes to disaster and sometimes to something more. These date for these encounters is not currently firmly set within the Mercyverse timeline, but appear to be happening the Christmas after Sage's defection in Burn Bright.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • He is one of the most powerful werewolves in the world.
    • On joining Bran's pack, he was disgruntled to find that Charles is more dominant than he is.
    • During Frost Burned, he and Adam had to go aside for a dominance display. It is unknown how that turned out, but obviously they are very close in rank, since a dominance display was necessary. And since Adam has been considered #4 after Bran, Charles, and Samuel, that means Asil is indeed very powerful.
  • He was mated to an Omega, so he's one of Anna's primary sources of information about her Omega nature and powers.
  • He can always track and find any of his packmates. (Cry Wolf)
  • He can mimic Bran's voice and manner very well. (Roses in Winter)

Relationships[]

  • He is very protective of Anna and works with her to learn how to manage her Omega powers.
  • Sage Carhardt and Asil had a flirtation for a while, but he still thought he would die soon and never pursued her.
  • Adam and Asil go off together for their wolves to settle the question of who is more dominant - essentially, who is the fourth most dominant wolf after Bran, Charles, and Samuel. The results of that contest have not been revealed. (Frost Burned)
  • At one point long ago Zee hunted Asil through, but Asil got away cleanly. (Frost Burned)
  • Asil takes Kara Beckworth under his wing in Roses in Winter and teaches her about the American Revolution in Burn Bright.
  • Tag and Asil can only talk about the present; they were on opposite sides of too many wars to talk about the past. (Wild Sign)
  • He and Juste are not on good terms as the French wolf appears to blame him for not doing something about Chastel sooner. (Burn Bright)

Trivia[]

  • He doesn't like to be called The Moor, saying a one-word descriptive name is something vampires do.
  • He has large greenhouses where he breeds roses. It is a rare honor for him to cut and give away any of his roses. (Roses in Winter)
  • He does not speak Thai, but is moderately fluent in Lao. (Unappreciated Gifts)
  • Modern gadgetry is one of his many talents. (Dating Terrors)
