NEW YORK (AP) — A school crossing guard was fatally struck by a dump truck in New York City on Friday, police said.

Krystyna Naprawa, 63, was on duty in Queens when she was hit by the truck as the driver was making a right turn just after 8 a.m., police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The dump truck driver remained at the scene and was not arrested. The crash is under investigation.

Police Commissioner Edward Caban said in a statement that Naprawa “dedicated her life to protecting the most vulnerable among us” during her 13-year career as a crossing guard.

Caban said his department, which school crossing guards are part of, “is in mourning today as we grieve the loss of one of our own.”

Visibility was poor across the city Friday morning because of rain and cloudy conditions.
