Rise in Caller Needs

The ACCESS RJ Healthline experienced a caller volume increase of more than 50%, demonstrating both a growing community need and trust in the Healthline. Our reach extended across most of California’s 58 counties, yet abortion deserts persist within the state, forcing many Californians to travel long distances for care.

Spending on practical support increased significantly, reflecting the rising costs of travel, lodging, childcare, food, and lost wages. The majority of callers were young, BIPOC, low-income or uninsured, and living with systemic barriers to healthcare. These trends affirm that reproductive injustice is not evenly distributed—those most impacted by structural racism and poverty face the steepest obstacles in accessing care.

Caller Testimonials:

“I appreciate all that you do, because it helped me when I needed it the most. I was able to get the procedure with a peace of mind, not having to worry about the cost of the hotel, transportation, or meals. What that did is, it allowed me to focus on my health and make the best decision one can possibly make in this situation.”

“Very kind. They literally lifted me up from a mental pit by giving me love and support. I got the support and help I needed and more…You guys are amazing and so necessary for people like me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

“La persona que me atendió, fue muy agradable y empatizó con la situación por la que estaba pasando, tomó mis datos e hizo todo lo posible para que pudieran brindarme la ayuda y así fue.”

Volunteer Impact

Our statewide network of volunteers supports callers by providing rides, funding hotel stays, offering emotional support, translation, childcare, and accompaniment. Our volunteers can also be found tabling, creating Comfort Kits for abortion-havers, attending marches and rallies, and taking action for reproductive justice policy.

Deepening our Roots: LA County x ACCESS RJ

We hosted a Medi-Cal Doula Training in Inglewood for Black and Brown residents of LA County.

We held our training at a mutual aid bookstore in the heart of Inglewood – where we shared learnings, discussed our hopes and dreams for transforming the BIPOC birth and abortion space in LA, and communed in mutual respect of all people’s birth or non-birth reproductive journeys. If you are wondering about the antidote to despair, we can confirm it is community.

ACCESS in the Community

As part of ACCESS RJ’s collaboration with Ibis Reproductive Health, we have been conducting research to assess barriers to reproductive healthcare in Los Angeles County since November 2024. This assessment aims to identify existing gaps and systemic barriers in LA that hinder addressing these needs with cultural sensitivity and accessibility.

We look forward to partnering and engaging with even more communities in 2025!

Advocating for ACCESS

While we know that laws and courts won’t save us, we also acknowledge our immense privilege in California to be able to advocate for proactive policies to advance and protect access to critical sexual and reproductive healthcare services.

ACCESS RJ co-sponsored three bills this legislative session, focused on expanding access to medication abortion, data-driven and accessible sexual and reproductive healthcare information, and emergency reproductive health services, including abortion care.

While two out of our three bills were held in committees, we celebrated a critical victory with Assembly Bill 260, which will protect and expand access to medication abortion in California.

AB 260 (Aguiar-Curry) represents a significant legislative win for reproductive health and justice in California. The bill includes multiple advancements, such as strengthening legal protections for providers and pharmacists who prescribe, furnish, or dispense medication abortion drugs like mifepristone, and ensuring they are shielded from criminal, civil, or disciplinary action — even in the face of hostile out-of-state laws.

ACCESS was founded in 1993 by clinic escorts who witnessed the many barriers pregnant people were facing, especially young or low-income folks to actually obtain an abortion.
