My Pets - free and not so free

Over the years, we kept some pets... fish, dog, etc. Then, we also have "visitors" who may got themselves temporarily caged.
I called this free ranging birds my pet since will will freely come into my house and help themselves to whatever food it can find. Otherwise, they will happily sit around branches just outside the house.
This free ranging iguana wondered into the wrong house and got itself caged! This fellow is about a foot long but don't underestimate iguana, it is quite clever. It definitely knows how to escape from the cage!

This iguana was about three feet long and it also came to the wrong place and got itself temporary imprisoned. We set it free after a few months. Iguanas are perfect tree climber. Their claws are sharp and can latch itself to branches without problem. This species are not local but came from Central America.
Ok, my puppy. I have two of these very cute puppies to be given away. If you think you can look after them, please give me a message on 012 878 2007.

Our most charming visitor

Since we move into this place, there are many unexpected visitors. In the early days, we have squirrel, slow loris, different types of snakes and today, we have a very colourful iguana. This fellow is definitely not a local species.

It seems to enjoy Ah Jon's company ...
See how big it is!
As I came back from town today, I found him outside our house. It was being chased by me and went hiding in the drain for more than an hour. After it emerge from the water, he turned dark brown. We brought him home and his colour quickly becomes bright green again.
More photos here.

Forgetful Snowie

It is interesting to watch the behavior of mother dog. Our Snowie delivered 8 puppies almost 3 weeks ago. Two had since died. After delivery, she put all the puppies under the car. Seeing that it was not safe, I moved them to the higher pavement near the house. Then she quickly moved them back to where they were initially. So, I figured that she wasn't feeling secure.
So, I gave her a box to put all the puppies in. She wasn't happy. She now moved just one of them into a pile of dry tree branches and dry leaves.
After cracking my head, I think she needed something over the head and somewhere dry. I quickly raised the "floor" in the space under the water tank by putting some old newspapers and scraps of paper. I closed one side and left the other side open. (The water tank is placed on top of two concrete structures) This time, she was happy.
After a few days, she moved just four puppies to "somewhere". It took us a while to find them. I found that the place I built for her was damp. So, I rebuilt and she stayed for two days and started moving her puppies again yesterday. Then I realised that it started to rain heavily and thanks God that she seems to know how to do weather forecast. Now, she moved all the puppies to the raised pavement in front of the house.
In the processes of moving, Snowie often seems to move only part of her family around. Did she forget that she has 6 puppies? Or is she expecting the human to help her?
The puppies started to eat solid food yesterday.
The puppies are now available for adoption. Anyone likes to keep dog as pet? I believe they can be good guard dogs as two of them can already bark!

My Rabbit - the eating machine!

I was instructed not to give too much food to my rabbit to eat. Then one day, I found that my friend's rabbit was so heavy and full of "flesh" under the fur. So, I figured that my rabbit is under nourished.
So, we thought that rabbit should be smart enough to know when to stop eating. Therefore, we gave him a big bunch of kang kong stalk and root. To our surprise, he finished munching the whole lot of kang kong!
We also realised that he is getting smarter. If the door to the cage is not fully latched, he knows how to open the door.
So, one day, when we returned from work, we found the stalk of orchid on the dinning table was reduced to this! Who did it? Of course it was the rabbit! He ate...
the whole stalk of this orchid!
So, he is eating anything... rice, orchid, etc.

Looks like he is telling us to have pity on him....
Yeah... give me food!
Dogs are cute but these species can be very fierce!

Dogs attract more dog!

We first started keeping dog well back in early 80's. However, after seeing them suffered in pain, especially during sickness, we decided not to keep any. In a blink of the eye, 20+ years passed and in 2008, we decided to keep one dog ...
Snowie. We kept her after much pressure from the young boys. We ended up spending more than RM700 to treat her STD and her still birth of puppies! Then, three months ago, we got this ...
... Spoty. He is learning to be passionate like Snowie, jumping up and down whenever we came back. However, this fellow is also very fierce. He may be young, but he ...
... can even challenge this dog, which is a few times heavier than him. We found this dog, hungry and tired, in our compund a few days ago. I have never seen him before even in our neighbourhood. He looks neat, tidy and his fur is nice. He definitely looks well kept.
However, I realised that he refused to go "home". So, where is he from? Has he been dumped by his owner or he lost his way? If this is your dog or you would like to adopt him, please let me know.

Fish in Captivity

Sea water fish at Miri International Airport...
I like sea water fish as they are beautiful. However, keeping one of those can be pricey. So, I can only snap pictures and admire their beauty from my computer. Here is one of those for soothing your tired eyes!

The graceful and the ugly

I was on the way to Bakum last week and on the way, I stopped by Batu Niah and ...
... I found that the food court there actually have a collection of animals and fish.
According to Daniel Yiek this is called pig nose turtle. It looks like pig from a certain angle. This turtle swim in such a graceful manner! On the other hand, they also have ...
... another creature which looks like a tortoise but it is ugly! It looks like it is from the stone age! And my blogger friend Daniel Yiek called this Alligator snapping turtle. Thanks to Daniel for the names.
By the way, Daniel is the author of http://sarikei-time-capsule.blogspot.com/. It is all about Sarikei, my hometown!

In Captivity

When we have freedom, we might not appreciate it...
I wonder how this tortoise felt in captivity. I always pity all those animals in captivity.

Joshua new pet

Joshua has been pestering me, calling me on my mobile phone, asking me every 10 minutes, to allow him to keep a pet dog. So, I gave in and he brought back this ...
... fellow. Since he brought it back, he has been carrying him everywhere. Tonight, he left this puppy in a big box and decided to keep him in his room, or my room. After sleeping for a while, the puppy had been crying for his mother dog. Joshua finally got up from his sleep, brought the puppy over to me and said, "nah... daddy, you "sayang" him. I wanted to sleep" Wah... so clever boy... so I told Ah Jon to bring the puppy to another room.
Ok, cute puppy. What should be his name? Any suggestion?

Our Rabbit

Our white rabbit has patches of "yellow" on the body now. We just found that he likes rice grain. Two weeks ago, he ate so much rice (a quarter cup a day) that we thought he has constipation! But thanks God, nothing like that happened.
He loves mango and carrot. Now, he is eating mango everyday and that explains the yellow patches on his mouth and feet!
Joshua likes the rabbit very much. If we ever let him out of the cage, he will immediately visit every corner and will go up the stairs to visit all the rooms. He will hide in Ah Jon's room, under his bed, etc.
See his "rusty" feet! I wish I can let him out more!
He will respond to my call of "rabbit". If I need him to be in the cage, I just need to call "Rabbittttt" and he will immediately appear!

His girlfriend is so big and dark

We have a special delivery on last Friday - it is a black female rabbit passed to us by George Tang. She is going to be "given" to our male white rabbit as a temporary mate.
She is big in size and very meaty. After seeing her, we realised that our male rabbit is far too thin and underweight. She is almost double the weight and 1 inch taller.
Don't panic, ok, Snowie is only doing her bit to register in her memory system that this rabbit is part of the family.
I don't think the white rabbit is any match with the black rabbit when fighting for food is concern. She is simply too strong for her!
Well, we shall see his performance in a few months time. I hope baby rabbit is the result of this friendship.

Close up view of rabbit mouth

Rabbit hates most if you try to open its mouth for "examination". So, I never have a good look to see how the teeth look like, etc. But I was a little surprised when I examined my photos...
The split upper lip is very obvious. In fact, I never knew how the lips actually look like as he simply won't let us see! Next surprise is the teeth on the upper jaw...they are perfectly arranged!
So, now you know how the mouth of rabbit looks like!
Forgot to mention...he is now back to jail as he has broken rules while he was free to roam his little kingdom! Perhaps, we will let him out again later.
Anyway, supervised freedom is always there!

My Pet - Mr Rabbit

I don't know whether his life is better or worse than before because we have stopped giving the so called "balanced diet" which consisted of coloured pellet. But there is still a little bit of green pellet which he ate when there was no better choice.
We found that he likes anything crunchy, sweet, paper based product, or straw. So guess what, when ever he was free to roam the house, he will sink his teeth into anything he thought editable.
We gave him air jambu, a type of fruit. He likes them.
We tried durian and he also finish them...
... give me more food ... he said!
... otherwise, he will be too lazy to move... just laid flat!
When he was charged with too much food, he will explore the bathroom he called home! He was up on ...
... the jumbo washing machine and of course he dropped inside because the machine is slippery. Once inside, there was no way to get out.
He is a climber. Climbing on top of everything. He has problem getting down. He once knocked off the washing machine exhaust pipe while we were washing. So the water drained for the whole night.
We found that his favorites are mango, pineapple, oranges, veggie stalk, carrot, etc. He seems to like any fruit. Will he get diabetic?
Oh, I forgot to mention, ...
... he ATE my STRAW BROOM! Naughty boy!

He didn't wash his face for 2 months

Being white has disadvantages. One of them is obviously the showing of all "uncleanliness". So here he is...no washing after a meal means that the dirt stays on...
... hahaha... he has been eating mango. He loves mangoes. We gave him some whenever we have a mango meal. He also loves the skin. So, he will help us to clean everything up of a mango other than the seed.

He is up to something again!

Alright, it is about our rabbit again. This time, he is starting on a big project! You see, we let him out of the cage which is placed in the bathroom, then migrating from the bathroom he is now allowed to wander around the house! He is toilet trained. So, he won't simply do his business!
Ok, looking at his face, the meek look tell me that he is up to something! He seems to be challenging me to something...
Oh... his freedom also means that he can search for food without restrain. And see what he found this time. He has sank his teeth into the huge winter melon in the dinning room.
Within an hour, he made a huge hole in the melon. Looks like his eating project will be over soon. It also means that I am the loser in this eating game but fortunately, I got another one hidden away somewhere else. Cannot let him know or else he will finish it off for me as well!

Lonely boy ...

Originally, Yee bought a pair of rabbits. A girl and a boy. However, Yee realised that the girl growth was stagnant and after a weekend away, he found that the girl was sick! A few days later, she dropped dead. Now, the boy is all alone and have everything to himself.
He has the whole cage...too small for one rabbit, needless to say for two. He also has the whole bathroom. He is still a big eater. If I fed him with 1kg of veggie, he will finish it. His digestive system needs some investigation!
In the morning, when I open the bathroom door, he will immediately jump out and search for his pellet! I normally wanted him to take veggie. Look at his cheek! So round and fat! The thought of BBQ rabbit is now very remote!

It is suspected that the death of the girl is linked to him! Does he look like a murderer? He seem to say "Stop staring at me or I will scratch you!". Ok ok, whatever, I will feed you with veggie and pellet! Sometimes, carrot if I am in a good mood.
Update: I found out by accident that he loves fruit! I gave him mango today and when I took it away from him, he sort of 'run after me"!
I also notice that there is only a certain type of pellet which he likes - the colourful ones.
By the way, Joshua was scratched by him last night!

Now it is the cat!

After the dog has quiet down, I am now hearing cats meowing at each other on the fence wall.
They were very alert. The moment I approach with my camera, they quickly pretended that there was nothing going on!
They quickly moved 6 feet apart as if they are now stranger. It is ok with me as long as they keep it to themselves in the wee hours of the night so that the peace of the night is not disturbed! Ok, let's click on the movie below to hear what transpire between their quarrel or love talk.
