Your next step ...
UPSR (sixth year) results were released only yesterday and I saw many parents anxious to register their children for their choice secondary school. I think they are driven by circumstances because the national education system is like a yoyo when deciding on the language to be used for the medium of education. I was told that it is now reverting back to English for science and maths subjects.
So what is your choice now? Riam Road Secondary School is now flooded with parents since Friday as their school is probably the only one who is firm on using English as the main medium.
Form 5 students just started their exam this week and I was approached by many students on what/where to study! I can safely say that if you intend to go overseas, and you know what you want to study, look for a university who is offering foundation. For example, Leeds University started their foundation in January and in September next year, you start university year one. In three years, you will be graduating at the age of 20/21! Amazing! Cost wise, I recommend UK as they are currently the cheapest. Don't believe me? Do your own arithmetic.

How to score when you didn't study!
When I was in upper Secondary school, objective test was first introduced into the examination. I simply hate objective test because the answers were all similar. It also means that I must really know the subject well in order to pass. I remember my teacher once said that if you scored 25% in objective test, you actually know nothing!
Statistically, someone found that ticking "B" for every question may even help the student to score high grade. So, one student actually ticked "B" for the 100 questions in 5 minutes and he scored 47%!! He didn't study at all!
So, the next time you didn't study for an exam, try ticking "B" for every question. Ok, do so at your own risk!

2010 Curtin Open Day
I went to Curtin Open day yesterday. I thought this was an open day to show the public what the uni has to offer. But actually, it was like a funfair .. food stores, kids corner, Kite flying, etc.

| However, this one had problem as I think it was too heavy and the wind was too weak. |

| Finally, "musical kites" show. The team of eight who controlled this kite formation/show did a fantastic job. I enjoyed it very much. |

After 5 long years ... Dr Stephanie Ting
Technology really changes everything. I just watched Stephanie's graduation ceremony back home! But thanks God that I have Ah Jon who helped to tweak and finally the streaming video played smoothly.
Stephanie receiving her certificate. She is now called Dr. Stephanie Ting. Only post graduate students wear "square hat" in Leeds.
I thought she is quite tall but amongst the locals, her height is overshadowed by them!
All the students taking the final oath.
The graduating students were on the left, parents on the right and on the balcony.
Leaving the graduation hall.

Attitude of a winning school
When Datuk Dr Fong took over Riam Road Secondary School, there are only 200+ students. I was told that the students had little motivation to study. Also, when he took over Chung Hua Middle School many years ago, I was told that parents used to avoid that school. Now, both schools were well sought after by parents. I came to know Dr. Fong personally when my daughters went to study in Chung Hua.
I knew that his no nonsense discipline is definitely working well. His system of running the school has won him prizes at national level. So, who is this Dr. Fong?
Here he is... a man who walk around with a huge rottan in his hand. He reminded me of my ex principal of St. Anthony in Sarikei in the late 60s' and early 70s'. Dr Fong is a man who has foresight and strategy and also understand the needs of students and demand of parents. He is the CEO of the school.
Mr Liew, the principal. I have to admit that I don't know him well enough to say anything about him.
Miss Chan. I would say that she works very well with Dr. Fong and I think they compliment each other.
The school has many good teachers. Having been teaching all his life, Mr. Leong is full of experience.
School assembly ... now they have more than 1200 students, from a mere 200+ 4 years ago. Can you imagine a life band playing the national anthem...
The school canteen is like a food court. The students have many choices of food!
The school is also a place for the students to share their joy together.
The students helped out in all aspect of activities, eg, the bookstore. This has helped the school to cut cost. They are responsible to help in giving out book loan and sorting out workbooks for the students to buy. This is teaching the student to be responsible.
A room equipped with computers for the student to do research, if required.
A huge medal to remind the students to excel and win. I was amazed to see students practicing early in the morning on the track.
There is not a single piece of paper/waste material in the school compound! Simple... fine is RM50! They walk the talk. So, watch out!
The library is being put in place. So, if you have books to donate, please bring them to the school.
The school is also like a garden... with beautiful flowers ...
... and a real garden!

Scholarship application
This is the time of the year when school leavers are anxious about their future. What they wanted to study, what they want to do... perhaps finding a job or further the studies. I can still remember that when I finished my form 5 exam, I suddenly realise that my education was coming to the end if I didn't do anything! Panic struck me...so I look into newspaper everyday looking for "opportunities". I found Taylor College amongst a few other technical colleges. I didn't know where to apply and chosen Taylor College. I studied for term and realised that the college was not for me and I switched to a technical college.
Going overseas to study is now so expensive. So for students who are short of fund, but wanting to study, I found a blog by a Malaysian. He is sharing his personal experience and after reading a few entries, I found his writing to be good. But do not hold him accountable if you fail to get a scholarship!
If you are planning to go overseas or wanting to apply for scholarship, his blog is relevant to you.
He gave a good summary on "Scholarship application Step by Step".

Timothy Register for Secondary School
Yesterday, we brought Timothy to his future school, SMK Chung Hua, Miri. This is where 4 of our children had gone through. We also call this Tan Sri Ting's school because he sponsored most of the buildings.
SMK Chung Hua can be seen clearly from this picture. It is to the left (with blue roof ) of the big white tower.
On entry, this is the main block consisting of administration and higher forms.
When students return home, this is what they will see... a bus stop to remind them to excel and stay ahead!
The school compound is neat and clean...with new block everywhere!
The corridor of the main block is full of ...
"advertisement" from Taylor's University College. The banner contains famous quotes which is a good thing. But below the college name, it is written "wisdom, integrity, excellence". I have no problem with "excellence" (true or not?) but claiming wisdom is very ungodly! Only God gave wisdom, like He gave to King Solomon. The next claim is "integrity". This is a business organization where money talk first and also mean that there should be nothing to misled the public and internal operation. Not possible! To me, one can only claim integrity for self and not for a large organisation.
We met the principal, Mr Richard Wong, who also goes to the same church as me.
Finally, registration. This is all done by the students for the students!

Petrosains KLCC
Petrosains in KLCC is a place where kids or adult could learn about basic (or advance) science. There are many exhibits which should interest anybody, including me. I do find the place very interesting. It covers a huge area and I think it must be 2-3 stories high. We first hop on...
... this bubble car which transported us into the deep deep wild tropical rain forest. It went up a steep slope, witnessing some of the "trees, caves", ...(see my earlier entry) ...
... immediately after we got off, we came to this first plasma exhibit. The kids immediately put their palms on the ...
... plasma tube and were amazed!
... some photo shooting session with ... don't know who!
They have a few of these 3D images, showing magic stick, bubble and car. They have nice 3D effect with objects floating in the air. Your hand may go right through ...
... and perhaps you can follow the instructions and make one yourself...
Many more photos to show... do come back again.

Dinotrek, KLCC
The two boys visited Petrosains in KLCC which actually consists of a Dinotrek and Petrosains...
At the Dinotrek, they have many games.... this one is a competition against two baby dinosaurs. The loser will be bitten!
... one of the exhibits ...
... another one. They actually move and make noise... all driven mechanically.
... the trip was RM5. Considering the number of games and lesson learned, it is worth the money.
... next, we are taking the bubble car deep into the tropical rain forest. That trip is worth every cent but you must have the time. See you soon in my next blog ...
