SCUA Welcomes Class of 1967 with Reunion Exhibit

On Friday, April 7th, SCUA staff continued their annual tradition of mounting an exhibit to welcome the 50th anniversary class back to the UNCG campus during Reunion Weekend. This year's exhibit, focused on the Class of 1967, featured their class jacket, yearbooks, scrapbooks, class newsletters, photographs, and more from University Archives. Materials on women in the Vietnam War from the Betty H. Carter Women Veterans Historical Project were also displayed.

The Class of 1967's class banner, which is part of our University Archives Textile Collection, was prominently featured in the exhibit. It also made an appearance during the class meeting on Friday morning and at their luncheon on Saturday.

We want to thank everyone who stopped by the exhibit. We hope you had a wonderful Reunion Weekend and a wonderful return to UNCG!

On Friday, April 15 as part of the University's Reunion Weekend activities, staff of the Martha Blakeney Hodges Special Collections and University Archives set up a large exhibit on University history and the University in the 1960s in the Pre-Function Room of the EUC Auditorium. Members of the Class of 1966 were able to reminisce while looking at photographs of former faculty members, gym suits, yearbooks, scrapbooks, and other items from their time on campus. Materials from members of the Class of 1966 who were veterans were also on display.

UNCG Class of 1965's 50th Reunion Weekend Exhibit

On Thursday and Friday, April 9-10, 2015, archivists Beth Ann Koelsch, Erin Lawrimore, and Kathelene Smith created a large exhibit for the Class of 1965's 50th Reunion weekend. The exhibit, which was mounted in the EUC Auditorium's lobby, included photographs, textiles, yearbooks, and other items from University Archives that document the Class of 1965's time at UNCG. Portions of the exhibit highlighted the commercial class, the nursing program, and civil rights activities on campus. Also, uniforms and photographs of members of the Class of 1965 who are part of the Women Veterans Historical Project were also featured.

During the weekend, SCUA also received donations of photographs and other materials from many members of the Class of 1965. If others have photographs or other materials related to their time on campus, please contact SCUA. While we are no longer seeking yearbooks or class jackets from this time, we are interested in unique items related to student life during the 1960s (and later).

Celebrating the Class of 1964 at Reunion

On Friday, April 11, University Archives joined UNCG's Reunion Weekend celebration of the Class of 1964. On Friday morning, archivists Kathelene Smith and Erin Lawrimore created an exhibit in the lobby of the EUC Auditorium featuring photographs, publications, textiles, and other materials related to the Class of 1964's time on campus. Events highlighted included Rat Day, the opening of Grogan and Reynolds Residence halls, and the school's transition from Woman's College to UNCG.

In the afternoon, Kathelene and Erin transitioned some of the exhibit to the Alumni House, and assisted Dr. Anne Parson's public history graduate students in conducting oral history interviews with reunion attendees. The graduate students also displayed their exhibit which was featured in the Hodges Reading Room in December 2013.

Additionally, throughout the day, the University Archives Twitter account (@UNCGArchives) featured photographs of the Class of 1964 at WC/UNCG.

Planning for future Reunion Weekend exhibits and activities is already underway. Erin and Kathelene have met with leadership from both the Class of 1965 and the Class of 1966 to ensure that SCUA is able to enhance their 50th reunion celebrations.

Alumni Reunion 2012

On Friday, April 13, 2012, the Martha Blakeney Hodges Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) mounted an exhibit of historical items related to the university for the Spartan Expo at the Alumni Reunion.  The exhibit was displayed in the Cone Ballroom of the Elliott University Center.

The exhibit consisted of historic artifacts, photographs, and textiles with particular emphasis on the 1960s as 2012 was the 50th anniversary of the Class of 1962 and the 45th anniversary of the Class of 1967.

The display of vintage textiles was a particular hit with the alumni.  Many had their photographs taken with the 1962 Class Jacket & Skirt and the 1950s Gym Suit on display.
