I second Chris, aptitude is much better than just apt-get. It's major advantage is, that it will uninstall packages which have only been installed to satisfy dependencies as soon as they are no longer needed. This makes keeping the system slim much much easier and you don't have to fiddle around with deborphan.

As for a good svn client on OS X, I either use the command line, or if I want to get a better overview, I use SmartSVN.

apt-get is dead, long live aptitude

Ok apt-get is not really dead, but aptitude has all the same functionality, plus the functionality of apt-cache, plus is does better tracking of dependecies.
