IT Support During Winter 2025 Energy Curtailment

December 17, 2025 by Lars Rohrbach

Due to the Winter Holiday, Energy Curtailment, and New Year’s Holidays, the Berkeley campus is officially closed for the period Wednesday, December 24 to Thursday, January 1, reopening on Friday, January 2, 2026. Additionally, much of campus is on reduced support for December 22-23, January 2, and the week of January 5-9.

All departmental computing servers will remain on and should be available during the break, but there will be no staff on site to provide any computing support or handle any requests. Automatic monitoring systems will alert staff to critical infrastructure problems, and any such problems will be dealt with on a best-effort basis.

The IRIS Helpdesk office will be closed Monday, December 22 through Friday, January 2, re-opening fully on Monday, January 12. If you need assistance during the week of January 5-9, please email help@eecs, and we should be able to reply and schedule an appointment with you if needed. Problem reports can be left on the Helpdesk voice mail (510-642-7777) or emailed to help@eecs during the campus closure period, but staff may not receive or reply to these messages until at least January 5.

Requests for network support or new IRIS accounts that are received after noon Thursday, December 18 may not be processed until January 5, 2026.

During the break, Instructional labs will be locked, but the main servers will remain online (for details, see the Instructional website). Instructional support staff will occasionally monitor inst@eecs email over the break. Please be aware, though, that staff may not be able to respond or reply to messages until at least January 5.

Computing support staff will be monitoring their email when possible, so please use standard email addresses to report any urgent problems. As a reminder:

Instructional Computing Environment: inst@eecs

Research / Staff Computing Environment: help@eecs

Corrected exports for EECS NetApp file server

December 17, 2025 by Lars Rohrbach

A recent report of a discrepancy in our file server NFS exports helped us to discover an error in our NFS export policies. The error would allow shares with the default NFS export setting to be mounted on some systems within EECS networks that they were not intended to be exported to.

We have corrected the error, and audited our NFS export policies. If you discover any unexpected change to availability of your home directory or project space, please feel free to reach out to help@eecs.

December IRIS Server Patching

December 8, 2025 by Lars Rohrbach

Microsoft will release their patches for the month on Tuesday, December 9th, 2025. Various IRIS Windows and Linux servers will be patched and rebooted Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.

PRINT, WINTERM and WDS will automatically patch and reboot Wednesday, December 10th, at 3:00am. WINTERM may be unavailable until 10:00am Wednesday, depending on additional software updates.

Linux servers lists.eecs, iris2.eecs (for access to the network and roster databases) will be patched and rebooted Wednesday night. DNS servers cronus and themis may also be briefly unavailable while rebooting at approximately 8:00pm Tuesday.

On Thursday, December 11th, the departmental DHCP server is scheduled for downtime from about 9am to 9:30am (actual downtime is expected to be shorter than scheduled). Linux login servers login.eecs/login-mfa.eecs will also be patched and rebooted around this time.

NetApp Fileserver Maintenance, Friday November 28, 2025

November 12, 2025 by Lars Rohrbach

We are scheduling a NetApp ONTAP upgrade, to apply a necessary update to our NetApp fileservers, from 8am to 12pm on Friday, November 28, 2025.

All Home directories and Project shares (CIFS/SMB and NFS) may experience disconnection during the update that may cause data loss on active, open files.  Please close your open files and save them before Friday morning. Services (e.g. webservice) that depend on this storage will also be temporarily down or unresponsive.

When maintenance is completed, NFS clients should automatically resume normal operation, but a reboot should help if they don’t. CIFS clients (such as Windows and MacOS) may need to remount filesystems, or simply be rebooted.

Soda Hall Electrical Shutdown and BWRC Network Outage, 11/5 7PM

October 30, 2025 by Lars Rohrbach

Our Facilities crew has received the new circuit breaker to be installed on the first floor of Soda (see previous IRIS News items for September 18 and September 8), and has scheduled the installation for the evening of Wednesday, November 5. As announced to Soda Hall occupants by the building manager via email, power to the building will be out between 7PM and 10:30PM, so building occupancy will not be allowed.

Since this outage is expected to be longer than the previous work, IRIS will be shutting down the department NetApp fileservers, and all systems that depend on them (such as webservers and login servers). Fileservers will be shutdown at 6:45PM; most other systems will be shutdown between 6PM and 6:30PM. Please shutdown any systems that depend on IRIS fileservice by 6:30PM.

We plan to keep dhcp.eecs and lists.eecs, the department mailing list server, online during this time. Redundant services such as Active Directory and LDAP will continue to be served from Cory Hall.

BWRC networks may be offline for a time during this shutdown, as they are dependent on Soda Hall.

Please contact us at help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you have any questions.

Updated winterm.eecs now available

October 22, 2025 by Lars Rohrbach

An updated winterm.eecs, running Windows Server 2025, is now available as a Windows Remote Desktop Server. As soon as the new DNS records propagate, your connection to winterm.eecs will find this updated OS with updated software versions.

Access and software is much like the previous winterm.eecs, though with a desktop experience that’s similar to Windows 11. See our EECS Login Servers page for more information on using winterm.eecs.

If you need to access the previous winterm.eecs (e.g. to copy files kept locally), it will remain online for the next week or two as winterm-old.eecs.berkeley.edu. Feel free to contact help@eecs if you need us to copy your profile from winterm-old to the new winterm.

winterm.eecs Upgrade, Friday Oct 10

October 3, 2025 by Lars Rohrbach

The Windows Remote Desktop server winterm.eecs will be taken offline at about 10am Friday, October 10, 2025, so that we may perform an in-place upgrade to a newer version of Windows Server. This upgrade may take a few hours; we expect that winterm.eecs will be usable again by mid-afternoon.

Soda 2F Network Interruption, 9/18 10:41 AM

September 18, 2025 by Derek Calderon

Networks on the second floor of Soda Hall were unavailable for approximately 5-10 minutes today beginning at 10:41 AM. This occurred due to a switch crash during troubleshooting a memory leak.

The network is now stable, but the memory leak issue still exists and requires further network disruption to resolve. We will be attempting to address this during tonight’s already-scheduled Soda Hall electrical shutdown.

Please contact us at help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you have any questions.
