Another Crooked Democrat Goes Down

Nick Blase, 47-year mayor of Niles and former Maine Township Democratic Party Committeeman copped a plea admitting to getting $420,000 in insurance kickbacks over the last 20 years.

The power mayors and village presidents can develop over the years can be awesome and the temptations of such virtual absolute power are obviously great.

Blase is 80 years old.

And, if you want to see the only video on YouTube of just indicted Bill Cellini, you can find the links here.

Family of dead Chicago Marathon runner may sue

Participants in any organized running event must sign a waiver absolving the race of any responsibility in case a serious injury or death occurs. But the family of Chad Schieber, the Michigan man who died while running in last month's Chicago Marathon has hired a lawyer who is looking into the tragic events of October 7.

From the Chicago "free registration required" Tribune:

The attorney, Gilbert Ross of Chicago, said Friday he believes the Village of Niles ambulance that picked up Chad Schieber, 35, of Michigan got lost on its way to the hospital.

But Ross said it's unclear how much time was lost and whether a faster response would have made a difference.

In court on Friday, Cook County Circuit Judge Ronald Davis entered an order that requires Chicago and Niles officials to preserve 911 tapes and other evidence in the case. Lawyers for all sides had agreed to the order.

Because of the heavy demand for ambulances that day, suburban crews were called into to the city to assist. My dominant post-race memory while resting in Grant Park if of sirens blasting constantly.

Chicago Marathon: Ambulance driver got lost, took dead runner to wrong hospital

Because of the heavy demand for ambulances created by the unseasonably hot weather in this month's Chicago Marathon, suburban crews were called in to assist Chicago officials.

An ambulance team from Niles, which is the town just west of where I live, was flagged down and began treating Chad Schreiber, who was in full cardiac arrest. But NBC 5 Chicago is reporting this morning that not only did the Niles crew get lost, but they took Schreiber, who had a pre-existing heart condition, to the wrong hospital.

Neither the Niles group or the hospital emergency room where Schreiber was taken were able to revive him.

Schreiber, a 35 year-old Midland, Michigan police officer, was married with three children.

Move America Forward caravan comes to Niles

On Tuesday evening, the Move America Forward "Fight for Victory" tour came to Niles, Illinois--the town just west of Morton Grove.

Work kept me from attending, so I did the next best thing: I sent Mrs. Marathon Pundit, who took several college level courses in photography in her native Latvia.

She did a fabulous job, especially since my instructions to her were basic--show up and take some pictures.

Up on top is retired Air Force Lt. Colonel Buzz Patterson, who in his "retirement" manages to write best-selling books, appear frequently on television, and of course, take part in the Move America Forward Caravan.

Over on the right is Dr. Steve Sauerberg, who is running for the Republican nomination for the US Senate in 2008 in Illinois--Dick Durbin's seat. Next to Sauerberg is a vote Durbin won't be counting on next November.

Diana Nagy sang Where Freedom Flies. Anne Leary of Backyard Conservative, who has her own post on Tuesday's rally, reports some of Nagy's relatives, who live twenty five miles south in Downers Grove, made the trip to up to Niles to see her peform. Leary also reports that there were a few Freepers in the crowd.

Anne wasn't the only blogger there, intrepid reporter Jake Jacobsen of the Freedom Folks showed up, that's Jake in red on the right. Their post isn't up yet, but I'm sure Jake and The Bald Chick will add their contribution soon.

And finally, a group shot of some proud Americans on September 11, 2007 showing their support of the troops in Niles, Illinois on a pleasant late summer evening.

Of the local media, CBS 2 and WGN-TV covered the rally.

Move America Forward "Fight for Victory" caravan coming to Niles, IL on 9/11

Good news is coming to Niles, Illinois. The Move America Forward "Fight for Victory" caravan is heading to my neighborhood: Niles, Illinois. I cannot make it, but Mrs. Marathon Pundit and Little Marathon Pundit will be there to show their support and take photographs.

Here are the details:

6:00 PM - Niles, Illinois
Pro-Troop Rally & News Conference & 9/11 Observance
Milwaukee Ave & W. Touhy Ave (Just north of the Chicago city limits.)

Bring letters, cards, notes of support & appreciation for our wounded warriors to this event, we will collect them and bring them to our recovering troops at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C. at the conclusion of the national caravan.

There's a nice plaza with a waterfall there--it's a great spot for the rally.

Hat tip to Third Wave Dave and Backyard Conservative.

Marathon Pundit Chicago River dumping follow up

A couple of weeks ago, Niles Journal reporter Daniel Cameron interviewed me on the telephone about my July 17 post about a milky substance I saw pouring into the North Branch of the Chicago River.

From his article, What Is This Stuff?

Concerned, Ruberry decided to get some evidence. He continued his run a mile and a half south to his home, grabbing a camera to take pictures. When he returned two hours later, the substance was still pouring out of the tunnel.

"This wasn't runoff from some guy washing his car," said Ruberry. "Whatever it was, there was a lot of it."

Ruberry, who works in telecommunications in Niles, decided to take action. He called the Cook County Forest Preserve Dist. The district said it would come investigate, but when it hadn't appeared after 15 minutes, Ruberry left the scene.

The Cook County Forest Preserve stated last week that it had no record of Ruberry's call, but said it would perform an investigation.

This does not surprise me. Among local law enforcement agencies, the Cook County Forest Preserve Police is regarded as a patronage haven for ward-heelers.

Think Chief Wiggum and the fictional Springfield Police from The Simpsons, and you have a pretty good idea what to expect from them.

Here's what I did that afternoon: I called 911, and the dispatcher transferred me to the Forest Preserve Police. If there is a next time, I'll call, based on information I've gathered since July 17, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the Cook County Water Reclamation District, and a non-government group, the Friends of the Chicago River.

The Cook County Forest Preserve Police can be tough when they want to be. Here's what I wrote a few months ago about a reputed incident, in a post about the crime rate in my hometown of Morton Grove:

Oh, in late 2005, while running not too far from the spot where the drifter's body was found, a Cook County Forest Preserve policeman, on a bitterly cold day, confronted me about allegedly--and I want to reiterate, allegedly, urinating fairly deep inside a grove of trees. No one else was there, which says a lot about the law enforcement force derisively known at "the tree police."

It's nice to know Chief Wiggum's boys have their priorities straight.

The polluter has not been caught.

Later today, or perhaps tomorrow, I'll have some more North Branch of the Chicago River pictures--this time of the flooding from this week's heavy rains.

May 3 marks the anniversary of Europe's first constitution, adapted in 1791 for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

In Niles, Illinois, this Volkswagen owner expressed Polish pride yesterday afternoon.
