The Lake District, England

Pada hari ini genaplah sudah usia poskad ini 28 tahun.

The English Lake District National Park is England's largest and covers 2292 square kilometres (885 square miles), the largest of the 11 national parks in England & Wales, containing over 1800 miles of footpaths through some of Britain's most beautiful countryside. The variety of spectacular mountains, peaceful lakes, rolling fells and bustling market towns make the Lake District a unique part of Britain and is also one of the most visited parts of the country.

The Lake District is the wettest place in England. It is also the most mountainous with 100 peaks over 2,000 feet and 16 lakes including the longest and deepest in the country. Five hundred million years ago the Lakes stood on the edge of the so-called "ring of fire". This was an area of intensive volcanic activity with lava and basalt being thrown up resulting in the creation of some of the area's craggy peaks.

Twelve thousand years ago the area was covered by ice which sculpted the landscape. In 1951, the Lake District was designated as a National Park to protect it for future generations. The Lake District is famous for its lakes, mountains and fells, and its association with the 19th century poetry and writings of William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter and the Lake Poets.

It is a beautiful, laid back town with lots to do, lots to see, great food from all over the world and friendly people everywhere you go. A visit to downtown Amsterdam is like taking a walk back in time, as the center of the city is filled with historic architecture dating back to the 17th century.

Warsaw Wilanów Palace, Poland

Wilanów is situated 10 km from the centre of Warsaw and is at the end of the historical Royal Route. Wilanów takes its name from words in Italian´villa nuova´. A palace with the park near Warsaw, built like a miniature of Versailles, at the end of the XVII century by an Italian architect Agostino Lotti for the King of Poland Jan III Sobieski. Several times rebuilt and changed later by among others Michelangelo Palloni.

Wilanow was built for Jan Sobieski (r. 1674-96), Poland's most dashing monarch. It was Sobieski who led the Catholic Allies in the liberation of Vienna from the Turks in 1683. This baroque belter later passed through the hands of several of Poland's most influential families, and it remained in private hands right up until 1944.

Wilanow mercifully survived the war, and today it represents one of the richest attractions in Warsaw. It's choc-full of splendid art, including paintings by some of the biggest names in European art, from Jean-Louis David to Bernardo Bellotto. The palace's fine gardens are currently undergoing renovation.

In the 1805 the owner Stanisław Kostka Potocki opened the public museum in Wilanow, which was one of the first in Poland.

Parliament Square, London

Parliament Square was designed to provide a more open aspect for the new Houses of Parliament built in 1870. Parliament Square was laid out in 1868 on site of a notorious slum.

Parliament Square is dotted with statues of famous statesmen, the most notable being Winston Churchill. A statue of Abraham Lincoln sits in front of the Middlesex Guildhall , completed in 1913.

Other buildings around the square include Westminster Central Hall, Westminster Abbey and St Margaret's Westminster. Opposite the Houses of Parliament, across Bridge Street towards Westminster Bridge, stands the rather forbidding Portcullis House, completed in 2001. This houses government offices and Westminster Underground (Tube) Station for Jubilee Line, Central and District Lines.

The square became Britain's first official roundabout in 1926 as well as the site of the first traffic lights.

The Palace of Westminster (more commonly known as the Houses of Parliament) and Westminster Abbey including St Margaret's Church were inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Site in 1987, in recognition of the outstanding universal architectural, historic and symbolic significance of this group of buildings and spaces. They are recognised internationally both as a group of buildings of outstanding architectural importance, and as a symbol of spiritual and democratic ideals throughout the world.

Postcard Lambs And Daffodils, New Zealand

Socrates pernah menyebut tanaman ini sebagai ‘Chaplet of the infernal Gods’.

Kita ikuti sebuah puisi daripada pujangga Inggeris yang terkenal dari abad ke-19, William Wordsworth yang memuja keindahan bunga daffodil ini:

'Daffodils'

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay;
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee,
A poet could not but be gay
In such a jocund company;
I gazed--and gazed--but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought.

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills
And dances with the daffodils.

- William Wordsworth

Postcard Paris Et Ses Merveilles...

Paris, the world's most popular city destination, has plenty of must-see places but make sure you spend at least a day strolling off the beaten path, as this is the only way to discover the real Paris: a lively cosmopolitan but undeniably French city.

La Seine, le quai d'Orsay et la tour Eiffel.

The Seine River (780km) is the second longest river in France after the Loire River. The old buildings, the riverboats, the changes of colour reflected by the water, the gardens, and the 32 bridges compose one of the worlds grandest, yet most endearing cityscapes.

Along the river are two of the great set pieces of urban spectacle in the contemporary world. The first sweeps down from the Palais de Chaillot on the Right Bank, crosses the river to the Eiffel Tower, and continues through the gardens of the Champ-de-Mars to the 18th-century Ecole Militaire; the other begins at the Seine and marches up a broad esplanade to the golden dome of the Invalides.

River Liffey, Batchelor's Walk and O'Connell Bridge, Dublin, Ireland

Ireland's River Liffey is the main river in Dublin, the capital of Ireland. It begins at Sally Gap near Kippure in County Wicklow, just south of Dublin. It travels about 78 miles through the center of Dublin and out into Dublin Bay, eventually reaching the Irish Sea. Down through the centuries the name of the River Liffey has taken many forms, which suggest Irish, English, French and Latin influences.

In public records, deeds and maps, the absence of a single recognized spelling may have reflected the sounds that individual scribes heard. Abhann Liffe, Gaelic for River of Life, could have become in an Anglicized version Avon Liffey. The formal name is now Liffey.

Bachelors Walk is a street and quay on the north bank of the Liffey, Dublin, Ireland, between Swifts' Row to the west and both the southern end of O'Connell Street and O'Connell Bridge in the east.

O'Connell Bridge is the probably the most famous one because of it's link to Irish Patriot Daniel O'Connell. This Bridge is in the city center and spans the Liffey between O'Connell Street to the north and O'Connell Street to the south.

It is the second bridge to stand at this location. Following the development of new streets, a new and wider bridge was needed because of the increased traffic. In 1880 it had the distinction of being nearly as wide as was is long and the bridge was renamed in honor of Daniel O'Connell.

The City Hall and Nathan Philips Square, Toronto Ontario, Canada

The City Hall symbolizes the modern thinking of Toronto. It stands on Nathan Philips' Square a 12 acre area containing green lawns and a reflecting pool that becomes a skating rink in winter. The First Tower on the right is 27 stories and the West Tower on the left is 20 floors high. The clam shaped stucture between the towers is the beautiful domed Council Chamber measuring 155 ft. in diameter and 40 ft. from the floor to the highest point in the dome.

The Square is named for Nathan Phillips, who was Mayor of Toronto from 1955 to 1962. Completed in 1966, Toronto's fourth City Hall was one of the city's first modernist buildings. The mayor, Nathan Phillips, held an international competition, won by Finnish architect Viljo Revell. Revell designed the council chamber as a low, round building, embraced by two concave office towers. The architect died before the building was completed and there is a commemorative column dedicated to him.

City Hall faces south on to the concrete expanse of Nathan Phillips Square. In the centre of the square there is The Peace Gardens and various sculptures are dotted around the city. The square is a lively gathering place, and hosts many public and civil events. At the square South end is a reflecting pool, a popular gathering place for people to relax in the summer, and ice skate in the winter.

Postcard of Historic Suffolk

Hadleigh Guildhall from St. Mary's Churchyard

Hadleigh Guildhall complex is situated next to St Mary’s churchyard and is some six hundred years old. Over the years it has had many uses from market house and Guildhall all the way to a cloth hall and even a school. Present day it is used as the offices for the local town council.

Anne of Cleves House in Hamlet Road, Haverhill

It was built in 1540 by Henry VIII as a marriage settlement for his wife, Anne of Cleves. It was restored in 1986 and it is now used as a private nursing home.

Orford Castle

Henry II built Orford Castle in Suffolk between 1165 and 1173. His plans in doing so were fittingly perverse. The castle was built on the coast, and was clearly meant as a strong point for shoreline defences. But the potential invaders were actually a representation of opposition from within the country.

Salisbury Cathedral Postcard

Salisbury has Britain's finest 13th century Gothic Cathedral boasting the tallest spire in the Kingdom. Construction on Salisbury Cathedral began in the Early English Gothic style in 1220. Set within eight acres of lawn and surrounded by historic buildings and museums within the spectacular Cathedral Close, the Cathedral is unique in being built almost entirely in one architectural style - Early English Gothic. Britain's tallest spire (123m / 404ft) was added a generation later.

View from the tower of St. Thomas' Church, showing the High Street and the gate into the Close.

The only major element to be added later was the famous spire, which came along in 1310-33. But its shape matches the cathedral perfectly and is made from the same stone, quarried from Chilmark 12 miles away. The spire was a daring addition, forcing the structure below to carry a dangerous amount of weight (6,500 tons with the tower). Only a multitude of buttresses, bracing arches and iron ties have kept it from collapsing over the centuries.

The Cathedral is a record holder for having the largest Cathedral close, the largest Cathedral Cloisters and the largest and earliest set of Quire stalls in Britain. Inside the Cathedral discover nearly 800 years of history including the finest preserved Magna Carta (1215), Europe's oldest working clock (1386) and most stunning font (2008). Explore the roof spaces on a tower tour, climbing 332 steps to the base of the spire, and admire the magnificent views across Salisbury.

Norway: Midnight sun at North Cape Postcard

To put the record straight, the North Cape, a magnificent sheer granite cliff face towering above the island of Mageroya in northern Norway, high above the Arctic Circle, is not, as many people consider it to be, the most northerly point in mainland Europe. However, viewing the midnight sun on Norway's North Cape is an unforgettable experience, the sun sinks majestically toward the horizon but then stops, hanging in the sky; a giant red ball over a pristine, golden sea. Then it begins to rise again.

Its 307 m high, steep cliff is often referred to as the northernmost point of Europe, However, the neighbouring point Knivskjellodden is actually 1,457 metres further north. Moreover, both of these points are situated on an island, which means the northernmost point of mainland Europe is in fact Cape Nordkinn (Kinnarodden), about 20 km from the village of Mehamn.

The North Cape was named by English explorer Richard Chancellor in 1553 when he passed the cape in the search for a Northeast passage. From then on, it was occasionally visited by daring explorers who climbed the steep cliff face to the plateau; famous visitors include King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway in 1873 and Thailand's King Chulalongkorn in 1907. A road was opened to the North Cape in 1956. Today, the North Cape is a major tourist attraction.

Memerhati pemandangan matahari jatuh memang sungguh mengasyikkan. Teringat BR suatu ketika dahulu di tahun 1980-an sebuah drama bersiri yang ditayangkan di TV bertajuk "Lure Of Sunset" yang mengisahkan tentang kasih sayang dan pengorbanan...
