Done By The City Hall

Tuesday Comic Strip Day.

Unknown and underrated, the funny comic strip City Hall was part of the satire boom of the late fifties. Originally drawn by cartoonist Dave Gerard, it was taken over by writer Doneby later in the run. It looks like he signed it with his real name, Don Cole. There is a cartoonist with that name, but he died in 2011. His obituary does not mention this strip.

City Limits

Tuesday Comic Strip Day.

I have shown some of these before, but I keep coming back to it. I like the way it is drawn, the jokes are funny and the subject matter is a really good one for a dailey comic strip.

Done By Gerard

Tuesday Comic Strip Day.

I have shown some dailies from this strip before. I am a fan of the art of oldtime cartoonist Dave Gerard, but it is the concept and the early sixties satire of writer Doneby that makes this one really stand out. Since Doneby later took on the strip on his own, I get the impression that he was the artist/writer and that someone at the syndicate matched him up with a more salable and experienced artist. Whatever the reason, they were a good match. There was also a Sunday version but in all my time as a collector I have seen only one sample.
