Far from me to disapprove such a monitoring layout.
You've surely built a successful system with those great tools on top of Nagios, which has great monitoring granularity but your team undoubtly needed years to find valid compatible tools and optimally tweak such a system.
Starting from scratch, a Zabbix deploynment would probably be a hell of a lot faster, allowing most of those functionalities, though obviously expanding it would nonetheless take some weeks.

Don't forget GroundWork Monitor for network monitoring software. It's like Nagios on steriods, LOL! If you install the SUSE V, you can get it up and running in just a few minutes (it's like $60 or something).

For startups/smaller companies who don't necessarily want to deploy a massive monitoring system, our hosted internal monitoring tool might be of interest - http://www.serverdensity.com

It does all the key stats like CPU, memory, disk + MySQL, Apache, etc. We have a web UI and make it easy to get alerts set up for SMS, email and iPhone push.

The whole point is it only takes a few minutes to get going!

You're already familiar with Reconnoiter, it sounds. Circonus is its SaaS counterpart, with a full complement of Monitoring and Fault-Detection features. It's /really/ cool, I'm very anxious for the production launch. :)

Nice post. Keep an eye out for Circonus in the next few months. We're just entering a closed beta now. I'm obviously biased (I work for OmniTI), but I've been in this industry for a *long* time as an opsdev guy, and I've never seen anything like it.

Grig -

Another tool that we employ here is called Tealeaf - it's proprietary and expensive but it allows you a couple of things that are unique:

1. HTTP replay of what consumers are actually doing on your site.

2. Custom event creation based on HTTP or content embedded in your pages.

3. Charts/graphs/dashboards and alerting.

4. Integration with other tools like Google Analytics and Omniture.

We use Nagios, Monit, Gomez and Tealeaf for internal and external monitoring and have had really good success.
